So I came into 50k, I grew up next to this old dude that had a 72 targa, and I thought he was so cool, he used to give us rides and it was always under a tarp. ok, I'm going to get to the point, i kinda want to be that guy in 40 years. So like I said, I got 50k to play with, I want to get a 911 to keep and baby forever, which should I get? Im thinking 06-07 Carrera S manual, but if you guys have a better idea, lmk.

 

I'd go with a 2009-2010 Carrera S. You will get a better PCM and more horsepower and it is right in your price range. Nothing wrong with the 06-07's, but again for a gain if 30 horsepower it would be worth getting a 997.2.

 

I don't want to sound like a jerk, but once the 50k are spent, are you ok with the running costs? These cars are not cheap to maintain in the long run.

Having said that, there are many cars you can buy in that price range, over the span of a few decades. If you want a modern car you might get more responses in the 997 forum.

 

I'm thinking an S&P 500 index fund for the bulk of it. If you want to spend $10-15K on a car I'd look at a BMW 135i or perhaps a higher mileage 996 base (1999 maybe for the dual row IMS). The 996, particularly if you find one with full leather / large leather is quite a machine - 90% of a 997 at less than 50% the price.

That said try to get into a 84 -89 Carrera .

Modern Porsches are mass produced throw away appliances. They just make far to many of them and they are just mass produced assembly line cars like any other. I really don't think they will stand the test of time like the air cooled classics have.

 

Mass produced perhaps, but throw away appliances? You haven't owned a watercooled 911, have you? I bought a new 997 S in 2007, and I've had 4 aircooled 911s including the one I have now. The 997 was put together as well, or better than, an aircooled 911 of any vintage. Of course, it wasn't nearly as much fun or satisfying to own as an aircooled one, but modern Porsches are still among the best designed and best constructed cars in the world.

 

I would get the cleanest, documented, maintained 78-89 911 you can find. Get a PPI from a reputable shop. Budget for annual maintenance as these cars are aging. Or check out the water pumpers. I am a fan of the 997.

 

If you want to be that cool guy with the '72 targa, 40 years from now ... you're going to need a '72 targa. The current new ones (10 years old counts as new), even 40 years from now are not going to be cool like a '72 targa (or similar). Nice, fast, great cars, yes. But completely different.

 

Buy a 964 or 993. They feel modern, have Classic looks still and an air cooled engine. I wouldn't spend $50k on anything water cooled for a daily driver.

 

Well I guess we will just have to agree to disagree, im okay with that , I will never own a modern water cooled Porsche . I feel there engine reliability is atrocious at best.

They are so mass produced , if you prang it up the ins write it off and you run out and get another. That is very difficult to do in the Air cooled world, they are so treasured its hard to get owners to part with them.

 

Agree with MYFLAT6 on an aircooled 911.
Any modern 996, 997 will lose lots of value unless you find a lower mileage 996 Turbo.
IMHO $50k will not get you a G50 911 coupe (87 -89) unless very high miles or needing money to fix things, etc; but $50k should get you a lower mileage 3.2 coupe in top shape and will appreciate at least some depending on how you drive it and maintain it.
There are always those great buys out there depending on your patience.

Too many electronics in the new cars to last 40 years. Most of the stuff is unrebuildable. My son bought a 2013 and my Mechanic told him to make sure and unload it before 100K.

A 997 cant be as bad as you guys are talking about. So what if its new, its still a 911. cars these days can last well into 300-400k miles with no problem with maintenance. Hey, TGIL would you part ways with your gt3? My back up plan if the 911 falls through is a near perfect condition e46 m3, its about half of what I have, and in 10 years, I think its a 70-80k car.

 

i'll jump in and say 87-89 911 coupe in the best condition you can find, for me they provide major league driving pleasure, endless fun, are rock solid and will hold value more than later models (the water cooled boys). another consideration is the 996 Turbo, they have a very loyal following are bat**** fast and are likely to increase in value. if you go that route get manual and X50. i have a miniscule budget so (here is full disclosure) in addition to by '87 911 Coupe i added an '89 944 Turbo. completely different cars both a riot on the road. enjoy the pursuit.

 

Air cooled guys giving air cooled answers. Not shocking. You can find a 993 for about 50k, not easy but doable. The 996 is probably the best bang for the buck but reliability is an issue. The 996 turbos and c4s's seem to be holding if not increasing in value. '09 or better 997 is the way I would go. Much of the water cooled problems are sorted out. No IMS and generally faster, better handling and nicer inside and out than 993 or 996. Problem is finding a low milage in your price range is gonna be hard.
