Three Wheelin'
I am not a total air cooled guy, as I do have a few waterpumpers as well as the two air coolers, BUT I do love them all. Air and water.
Also, I feel very strongly along the lines re: the reliability issues of the 996 as well as the 986. My greatest fervor leans heavily to the '88.2 and '89 - 951 and the G50 Carreras, as these are indeed very dynamic and thrilling sports cars. My '89 turbo 944 is a blast to own, but since we are speaking to air cooled 911 VS certain water cooled 911s, my money would go towards these cars: '87-'89 Carrera, 993, 997, 964, 996 GT3.
Some of the above will be a tight fit in that budget, but with that amount of free capital, you have some leverage to reach outside and snare that perfect sports car.

Drive a bunch and see what moves you. Then layer in all of the other analysis.
I've owned air cooled for 12 years and recently added water cooled. And I LOVE them both.
Have fun.

Had them all. My advice is to get 987 Boxster Spyder. For 50K you can get a real nice low milage example. One of the best road cars Porsche ever made. Since they were made in very limited quantities and are a very special car, good chance they will be worth quite a lot down the road. Check it out.
