Post recovering front seats

I just finished today recovering both of my front seats with a kit I purchased off e-bay.The guys name is Torsten Nicht and he sells kits for Porches on e-bay,he has a website that is under construction-www.inlandimports.com.I have never done this type of work before but the covers on my 1983-911SC were beat, and I won the bid at less than $300.00 for the kit.The kit comes with 4 pieces for both front seats,it is made of vinyl but the inserts feel like leather,it took me about 5 hours per seat to complete the process,I took photos but have to get them developed. For anyone that has seats that are shot and you are the average back yard mechanic I highly recommend doing it yourself and I would buy from this guy again. It is tedious work but can be done, pictures to follow.

Did you replace any foam padding? If I did mine I'd like to replace the molded foam seat bottom on the drivers side. I was wondering if you could swap the right seat bottom for the left? as it hasn't seen as much use.
looking forward to the pic's

How do you refoam the seats? I would like to get more foam into the driver's side seat back and seat, the leather is 90% with no cracks so i would prefer to leave it original but the foam is not that foamy anymore.

Theres a place in Oxnard Calif. World Upholstery and trim (they advertise in Excellence) that sells the molded foam. I was quoted just a few weeks ago $275? for the bottom and I think the seat back was $100. The bottom on my drivers could use new foam and I'm almost tempted to just replace the foam as the leather is in good shape.
I guess I could try it and see how it comes out just replacing the foam and maybe a die job? My passenger seat looks real good. Hmmmmmm?????

I did not replace any foam, once I stripped the covers off the foam visually looked good and the seats were comfortable to sit in so I did not see any reason to.I have heard that some guys will go to a fabric store and buy batting,I guess this is some type of foam/cotton material that is used in the industry to add padding.I will send pics as soon as I can.

As to switching the seat backs from seat to seat, this is easy to do. You just remove the plastic covers at the bottom sides of the seat backs (2 screws per cover) and then remove the two bolts on each side of the seat. There is also a little pulley mechanism that connects the seat lever to the base and you can just remove the retaining nut and pop this off. I would guess you could switch the backs in about 1 hour.

By the way, if anyone is looking to replace or upgrade their seats I have a set of black partial leather seats from my 87 Carrera in very good condition that I may be willing to sell.

It looks like the seat back is in 2 sections, the frame which consists of the head rest and side bloster and the middle where the back rest is.

How do you get the back rest section off the frame section to inspect the foam?

thanks

Kenshi,I hope I understand your question, here is my answer-when you remove the seat from the car you can then remove the seat back from the seat bottom, this is done by removing 2 bolts on 1 side and 1 bolt on the other side plus disengaging the cable for the seat tilt forward mechanism, now you can remove the back from the bottom.Once the back is removed, flip it over so the headrest is now at your feet, you are now looking at the bottom of the back, there are 5 tabs that are bent over that the material has been "stabbed over" straighten out these tabs, you can now start lifting off the material from those tabs, now the only thing holding the material is about 4 to 6 hog rings, remove those and you can now start removing the cover, once the cover is off,you are now looking at all the foam that makes up the seat back. When you are pulling the material off and if you are planning on re-useing the material, once you get to the button that allows the seat back to flip forward, you can slip your fingers under the little frame around the button and pull it out away from the material so you can pull the material out.Hope this answers your question.
