Default NEED HELP BUYING A 1987 PORSCHE 3.2

HEY GUYS IM NEW TO THE FORUM AND AM LOOKING TO BUY A 87 PORSCHE 911 COUPE. THE ENGINE WAS REBUILT IN 01 AND EVERYTHING IS ORIGINAL ON THE CAR. SUPPOSEDLY EVERYTHING WORKS ON THE CAR, A/C BLOWS COLD OG PAINT ON THE CAR AND COMPLETE WITH RECORDS. ASKING PRICE IS 34K. OWNER SAYS ITS ALWAYS BEEN A CA VEHICLE AND DOESNT LEAK OIL OR SMOKE UP ON START UP. IS THIS A FAIR PRICE FOR THIS VEHICLE? CONDITION IS FAIR ON THE VEHICLE AND INTERIOR LOOKS TO BE PRETTY CLEAN. DOESNT LOOK LIKE ANY WORK NEEDS TO BE DONE REALLY. WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?

Why are you shouting (using CAPS)?

Cars seems suspiciously under priced unless its got massive miles (does it?), do a carfax to make sure it hasn't had an accident and then jump on the car by placing a deposit subject to satisfactory PPI. If you are not going to do it then let me know and I will jump on it. Even if needs a $10k to make it perfect its still a good deal.

Can you post pictures? That sounds like a price only a close friend would give you. I would drop everything to go look at it if it weren't Christmas morning.

Agree with the others, this car sounds like it's priced below market. Some photos of the car would be useful.

Who did the rebuild? Was it a top end rebuild or a full rebuild? How many miles on the rebuilt engine? What is the oil consumption like? Does the car have a clean title? Does it pass CA smog?

I did a carfax and everything came out clean. The motor showed it had about 122k in 04' tho. Its a clean title currently registered. I dont have the pics on me here hopefully I can snap some today if i get to see it. But from what i saw it does have some chips and wear on the rubbers but not that bad. Only concerns me last reported mileage in 04.

Be aware that Carfax is notoriously unreliable. Many issues never get reported so their information should be regarded as inconclusive.

A PPI from an experienced and competent shop that is familiar with air-cooled 911's is your best bet.

Odd that last reported mileage is 04 on a california car. in CA the smog check done every 2 years reports mileage. The cars i've bought show this like clockwork. I'm assuming the car is a CA car.

I agree with others it seems priced a bit low, depending on miles and real condition.

You can see the smog check history here. If there is nothing here it's not been registered, driven, or in CA.

The car has about 140-150k on it. The engine was a complete rebuild and has 60k on the vehicle. Going to do the PPI today. If it all turns out good with no big problems, is this a good purchase? Or is anything I should be looking out for that will be a big concern?

In my humble opinion- this car is about $5-7k under the current market conditions for a 3.2 G50 with that amount of mileage. Unless you know the owner, a PPI is worth it's weight in gold.

Agree, just make sure you get a proper PPI & not a skinny one.

34k is fair IF the PPI checks out, get a leak down and compression, have the paint checked. if the car needs 5k or so of maintenance, it's a fair deal I think as priced. But it shouldn't need anything "major"

also see my post about the mileage, plug the VIN into that site and make sure it passes smog. If it doesn't show then that car was sitting for a long time and I'd want to know what has been done to bring it back to life (appropriately)

good luck!

Agree, a good/detail PPI cost at least $300-$400. Make sure you take it to a reputable Porsche mechanic. It will save you money in long term.

So i pulled the trigger and went on getting my first old new car..love how it drives, only thing is that i just bought a new battery and from 1 week of not driving it, went completely dead on me. Might have a little drainage from somewhere. but overall i LOVE this car..little maintenance to be done but Im happy and well worth the wait.!!
