Default SSI Heat exchanger/muffler recommendations

Hey Guys,

Just picked up another 1978/79 SC, after selling my 996 & 987,

Looking to order some SSI heat exchangers, just not sure which ones to order as they have different flange sizes?

I think I have the 930/06 motor according to my engine no: 6590388?

Also can anyone recommend a good muffler at a reasonable price? I looked for Danks but seem to be discontinued,

how much performance is the gain also?

Pelican has a good selection of Dansk mufflers for a 3.0 liter motor.

I had a look through pelican, I think I require pre 1974 style muffler not one made for the 3.0 engine

I googled those items recently and found links for the SSI heat exchanger and 2 out muffler systems.
Good hunting.

I just did this swap a couple of months ago and picked up a 2-in-2-out Dansk w/ center outlets from patrick motorsports for about $700. It's certainly loud, but not so loud that it's bothersome on the street--at least I don't think so. Here's what it sounds like:

As far as the flange thickness, I think pre '80 were thin flanges and after that were thick. If you crawl under there you'll be able to see the existing flanges to confirm--you can easily see the difference between 8mm and 21mm thick flanges.

Sound is great...torque is better...they often do not go hand in hand on a stock motor.

Magnus Walker cars have nothing on the sound of Dave's set up.

To my ears one of the best car sounds Ive ever heard where you dont need earplugs.

That does sound great...Dansk makes a nice product...not as light as some but I've always gotten (2 Dansk units) better mid range with their stuff.
I put a pea shooter on my SC and baffled it just a tad in one outlet to maintain the mid range I had with a Dansk 2 in one out. Love the visual of the two center pipes on both mufflers.

Suggest going to Patrick Motorsports website, seems SSI is owned by Dansk. Pelican Parts has good information and exhaust products regarding heatexchangers, mufflers for aircooled cars.
Also, you can see lots of pics of SSI/header set ups if you google ssi vs header for 911 Porche.
Enjoy.

I've heard some people saying there were differences in weld quality between SSI headers and SSI headers under Dansk, but I'm not sure of the veracity of these statements and it seems like heresay more than anything.

I'll point out that these are put together by hand, so be ready to get your rubber mallet out and get to beating to make the heat exchangers fit. Mine took quite a bit of pounding and swearing to make the exchangers clear the clutch omega-spring and pre-74 oil hard-line.

It was not fun. Though at least I was blessed with good studs; not a single one broke and I was able to reuse them without issue. I bought a new set of studs just in case and was going to take the old ones out but...well they didn't want to come out and I had had enough already by then.
