Cost of PPI with leakdown and compression
I've just been quoted approximately $500 for a PPI (inclusive of leakdown and compression) on an SC.
I wanted to compare with prices recently paid by other people for a comparable job?

I think mine was in the $375 range for full ppi with compression and leak down. Dozens of pictures and a 10 page report. Good ppi. No surprises yet they didn't call out.

Is this a shop you plan to use for your car? Do they have a good rep? If you bring the car back with a problem that they missed on the PPI, will they work with you?
There are four types of shops....
Top guys who know they are good, do top work, are turning work away, and expect to be paid.
Good honest shops that do good work, but you have to work with them.
Sheisters that charge top dollar, blow smoke up your butt, and disappear suddenly.
Clueless idiots who take any job they can and f**k it up to make rent.
If the shop you are considering are type 1 or type 2, I wouldn't sweat $100 bucks either way.

For any immediate work needed day zero, yes. Longer term, probably not, mostly because it's a bit of a schlep from where I live and there are other good shops closer to me.
Very good rep. Comes recommended on this very forum in many posts. Which is how I selected them in the first place (plus they're located close to the seller). Type 1 in your list for sure.
That I don't know. I'm really hoping they don't miss anything at all, especially head studs.
I was already quite set on going with them, but I had no idea of what to expect price-wise so I was curious to hear what the going rates are.

It's very easy to NOT miss head studs. Pay the extra to have them remove the valve covers and check them for you.
Now the part that is a gray area is whether or not they torque them. I would say do NOT have them torque them. If one breaks while torquing it, then it could get really messy. Who pays? You because you had the work done or the seller because the stud was going to break anyway? Lawsuits have started over less.
But if they pull the cover, they can check to see if any of them spin because they are broken. Will cost you no more than a little extra labor and the cost of valve cover gaskets.

My opinion is they will NOT work with you if they missed something, It is till caveat emptor, they will give you their best judgement but PPIs always miss something. It is hard to get everything , but they should check the things on their or your list.
Some owners do NOT allow valve covers to be removed in fear of leaks, but that is their call, Or they may demand that if you want it removed you pay for a set of cover gaskets, which may or may not be included.
I certainly would not allow a mechanic to torque head studs if it were my car , but usually they just put a finger on the end and wiggle, if it broken they instantly know.
Bottom line is always have money in reserve for things you will find.
data point ...
My car is in bits currently due to broken headstuds. when I took the cover off to do a valve adjustment one fell out .
The rest seemed fine .. when I got the engine out on the engine stand and rotated it , two more fell out ... guess I was due
