Stuck with wrong VIN plates on 930.
I bought a black 930, I noticed after the purchase that the VIN did not start with 930 as it is supposed to!
After ordering the certificate from Porsche classic, I was told the VIN was for a Silver Metallic 1978 911 SC...
I'm trying to figure out what the original VIN is but the plates have been swapped. Is there anyway to decipher what the original VIN was? I brought it to Porsche Lauzon, they say it's a factory Black 930 with 4-sp tranny, turbo axles, turbo suspension & brakes, stock turbocharger, factory wide body with no welds and no signs of a repaint. We even took the door panels of to make sure black was the original color and it is! But the diff and crank casing are from a 3.2l...
My question: if I pull this car apart into pieces, will we be able to re-trace the original VIN from somewhere?
I want to know who you really are...

There is a VIN on the early 930 (you did not mention a year) that is located (stamped) into the metal behind the leather knee pad trim next to the ashtray & under the glove box door. Go take off the knee pad & see what you have.

Be very careful with this. A car with "incorrect" VIN tags can get you into a lot of legal hot water, as well as difficulties with titling and selling a car with rapidly appreciating market value. If it were mine, I would consult an attorney who has a lot of experience with the laws as they apply to automobiles where I live. This may turn into an issue with the original sale of the car to you: whether the car was properly represented, whether the previous owner gave you clean title on the vehicle, etc.
Good luck.
Good luck.

All should match, take the build # above the ashtray or behind the knee pad and send that to Porsche with your VIN to ask if it matches.
When Porsche builds a car it is for a specific market OR ROW. Different regulations apply for each market. All that info should be on the VIN code.
If the build and VIN codes don't match, talk to a lawyer.
