Default muffler question

I purchased a used Super Sprint dual in single out muffler for my 82 SC for use on my SSI's. It is quite loud @2500 rpm and up. Is this normal? Does anyone else have any experience with this muffler? How does a Dansk or Bursch compare??

Gentlemen:

Just my opinion (sound level is subjective), but I think the world of Monty Mufflers and this is all we use for street cars.

These come in:

Dual in; single out

Dual in; dual out

Single in; single out

Nothing better,.............

I have a dual-in single out Monty with my SSIs and, although it drones a little below 2500RPM, I like it a lot. It has that nice metallic 911 sound.

The thing is a piece of art too. It's a shame you can't see more of it without getting on your knees.

I've had a Bursch on my SC for a while 1 in 1 out don't think there is a bhp gain but it's quite deep a low /medium revs and really let's the engine sceam higher up , I would say it was loud but not annoyingly so .

I think my Monty & SSI is wonderful.. but the choice for me was either Monty of the stainless sport Dansk.. and for trivia, my impression is that audio quality guys seem to like the Monty and will explain the preference in exotic frequency style/whatever.........Ron

I have a single in single out GHL on my SC and like it, deep rumble and cool sound above 3,000 rpm. And the best part is there is no resonance at all! Which can not be said about some muffs.

I have a Bursch on my CAB with SSI's. 2 in 1 out. Different sound than the GHL definatley. Nice mellow rumble at start up, but sounds like an F-1 car above 3,500 rpm. And no resonance.

I like them both.

Matt,

Do you put the cat back on when it's time for smog? I'm a new 911 owner and I was under the impression that SSIs weren't CA legal. It sounds like a great upgrade though.

Jjb:

You'd have to reinstall the original heat exchangers, cat, & muffler to be legal and pass smog.

Now then,...if all of the hardware was liberally coated with a copper-based antiseize as things were installed, you'll have no trouble swapping exhaust systems anytime you want.

The bursch has a nice burble, not much louder than a stock muffler, but I found the fit and finish awful. Dumped it and went to a Dansk sport which I liked much better. This was on my 84.

I'm running B&B on the 94, it is loud and I like it...other SC's with the B&B's sound about the same.

Oddly enough I can't tell the sound difference between the single outlet and dual outlets. Maybe my hearing is going...

I haven't had to smog it yet since I've owned the car. But it past previously with no cat. Plus where I live, the smog techs aren't the sharpest tools in the shed. If I have to I will be able to just swap in the old system and meet the requirements.
