Details on my new (for me) 82 911SC
Well, got the car home today. Too bad it's snowing, or I'd be checking out the new ride a bit more. It's a nice car, though it's gonna need some stuff pretty soon. Here are the details.
1982 Pacific Blue Metallic 911 SC
Paint original and in good condition (8.5 out of 10)
No body damage
No Rust
123,000 miles
Tranny Rebuild at 80k
Clutch new at 80k
New OEM Fuel dist.
New Distributor
********************
Has new tensioners at 110k (not carrera)
has airbox pop off valve (new knowledge thanks to Randy P)
Interior 9 out of 10 . . . no dash cracks
Runs strong
Rough Idle (maybe due to leaking air from popoff?)
Nice, comprehensive set of service records
small stone chips in winshield
paint chips on hood (not bad & already touched up)
Rear tires new
Front tires need to be changed
Brakes great
Compression and Leakdown came back good.
***************************************************
Owner originally was asking 13,500 and after much negotiating, I got the car for 11,500. I plan to get the tensioners done carrera style, and put some new front tires on her and enjoy for awhile...I'm still a bit jittery from making the purchase, but just looking at the car makes it worth the money!
Any feeback or suggestions would be great. And thanks again rennlist for the great resource that provided me with a good education before entering the P-Car subculture!

Mada:
Congradulations on your SC purchase. Once you get her all sorted out to your satisfaction, you'll absolutely love her!
Just my opinion, but I'd save the cash and not bother upgrading the tensioners to Carrera style ones for awhile. Since the originals were replaced at 110,000 miles (hopefully with OEM tensioners for that year), you can probably get another 30,000-40,000 + miles (or many more) out of them without having to worry too much.
Good color too!

Burning Brakes
Congratulations on your new P-car, I hope you enjoy your new ride. During your initial inspection stages, try and find out when the valves were last adjusted. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

Looks like the valves we adjusted about 40k ago.
I'd like to find someone local who'd be willing to let me learn how to do this . I'll pay for the first one, then I'd go for it myself.
My plans for now are to work out the rough idle issue, adjust the valves and do the tensioners within 20k. I have to replace the winshied wiper pump, figure out why the engine cover won't stay up on it's own, get it inspected and insured. Then I want to drive!
Thanks guys.

Per my service manual Valve Adj. interval should be an every 15k service (for an 84 - 89). I don't know if it's the same for an '82 but I suspect it would. I would start w/ a valve adj. before you try to chase the idle issue, it may save you from chasing your tail.
For the engine hood, most likely it just needs the "hood shock" replaced, I'd get the HD vers. for apx. $15 - $25. Very normal issue.
Strongly suggest picking up the Bentley Service Manual for your year, apx. $80 if you do an online search (I think Bill G. says Buy.com has them for less).
Enjoy the car,
Bill W.

Mada,
Congratulation!! You finally got one after a long search. The car looks great and have fun.
I'll be doing my valve clearance sometime next week and tune-up. And also inspection/test of cold start valve and replace the fuel filter. These are basic maintenance procedures and easy to perform at home. You're welcome to stop by my place anytime.
Good luck......

Nice purchase. I'd buy one just like it today!
Congrats.
