Amazing that a 911 of any sort survived the early '80s. Even in '86 when I put on a Porsche customer drive thing for PCNA @ Firebird it was all about the 4 cylinder water cooleds and the 928. But nearly everyone showed up to drive the 930. I was bitched out by the German Guy From The Factory for pointed that out in the debrief...........

Trying to keep the 'Secrets' - and that era for Porsche was very uncertain and for the enthusiast to arrive and drive and ride-a-longs. Those enthusiast can really form opinion for the rest of the community. Especially before the InneRNetS of today. I don't know what the big deal was from Porsche's side was at that moment. The car was more than capable for the time. And to think they wanted to nix the 911. Tradition dictates that. The 911 is rear engins, only if they could have made it mid engine in the late 70's. But alas it wouldn't be an 911.
Only took Porsche to figure the mid engine bit out 50 years on, Boxster Cabriolet. And then it took another generation cycle in development to get the Cayman. But they still didn't make the Interior big enough for their first generation of that car for us bigger folk. But they have redeemed themselves with their newer model.
