Hi, a guy in my "hood has a 1973 Carrera and he is considering selling it. What is a 1973 Carrera worth in general ? I have not driven it, but it looks nice. Not rusty white ,black. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for your time

Or as in "A 1973 911 T or E or S?"

Good 1973 Carrera's sell for $65,000 and up.

Good 1973 911's sell for $6500 and up.

well, wow, maybe I'd better offer $6500 to be on the safe side, but I bet it's a real one. I was gonna tell him I'd cut his grass free for the rest of my life. I'm still gonna tell him that but I'd better be prepared to throw down some boot too. Do you think they are going up in value, down, or staying the same ? I mean, are there so many neat new Porsches out there that the old ones are no longer as desirable, or, are the new ones so complex that the old ones will continue to gain favor ? I don't think I could fix a new one if it broke.

Michael is correct. Which one is it. If it is a "Carrera RS" yes a "real one," Porsche only made 1590 of them (according to Bruce Andrson's Porsche 911 Performance Handbook). They are rare and a real find. There are many 911Ts, 911Ss & 911Es produced during that year. They are all different Porsches. Does it have the Carrera designation or on the engine lid, does it say 911T, S or E? You may have a real find on your hands if it is a "real" Carrera....Do some real homework and let us know which one you've stumbled on to.........

I've seen 73RS's go for as much as $125k (lightweight version) in immaculate condition. Condition and originality is everything on those cars...

O.K., it is a long story, but I am somewhat certain it is real. It has been modified at some point with flairs, but that does not bother me. I like the way it looks. Just hard to put a value on a Carrera. Surfing this site helps a lot, and after 2 1/2 hours of doing that, I've decided that the thing to do is just forget it and try to think of something else ! I have a 1974 Porsche that i got on ebayso I have a little knowledge , but I could not pretend to know the first thing about the value or originality of this Carrera. I remember when 65,000 was what a Cobra cost and I thought that was nuts. Now I wish it were a replica.

First of all, only the VIN will tell you what it is. (if it hasn't been tampered with) Then, you should check the engine case #, trans. case #, etc. Carreras came with flared rears. A "real" 73 Carrera is hard to find, so jump on it if it is!

There are loads of regular early 911s that have been modified to look like Carrera RS's. The one you're looking at is almost certainly a modified 911T, E or S. Get the VIN from the driver's side window pillar or from where it's welded in next to the gas tank, or under the trunk lid in front.

Come to think of it, if there's a VIN on the driver's A pillar, then it's certainly not a Carrera RS.

The correct VIN for an RS would begin with 91136XXXXX. If that fifth number isn't a 6, then it isn't a Carrera RS.

(If it is, it still might not be real. Guys have been known to change those numbers.)

My buddy says it's a real one, he looked it over pretty close. One tire is rotten and needs replacing, fresh gas and she should be ready to go ! Big fat Pirelli p7 needed, do they still make those ?

Update, it's been confirmed as a genuine 1973 RS lightweight m471, and retains lightweight windows, seats, mats, body panels, but has been converted to m491 RSR spec for racing with factory RSR wheels, flairs, bumpers, oil cooler, trans cooler, and fiberglass hood formed over balsa wood stringers with fuel door.Engine is the original block but now closer to 2.8 RSR spec.
So my question is:
Has the car been de-valued by these modifications even though they are "neat"(I really like the modificatins personally)
OR
Has the cars value been increased by the addition of these items, as it is a real rs lightweight car with the addition of valuable parts
OR
do the RSR parts have a value that offsets the cost of removing the flairs and returning the car to "as delivered" condition making the car's value the same as any other RS (LW)in similar condiition (condition 2)

That car could be extremely valuable! Condition and quality of the RSR upgrade are key. Could be worth well into 6-figures if it's well done and mint. See an example here:

Before anyone says what they think this is worth I would say to get the VIN to be sure. An RS Lightweight is extremely rare and there are a million knock offs. If the question was posed as "is this a real '73 Carrera" a legit answer would be yes. Is this a factory original '73 lightweight with the correct VIN, chassis and engine numbers, now that would be a different story.

What do you mean by 'confirmed?' What's the VIN? If you post it, we can easily tell you if it's authentic, as well as what options it originally came with, as well as its original color -- even a good part of its history. There are very few of these cars. I don't know that any are un-accounted for.

I have the Konradsheim Carrera book with a listing of every 73 Carrera made, and Jack is right, give us the VIN, and I'll tell you the engine number, tranny number, colors, options, lightweight status, etc...
