Well, he's hardly out of the blue, but certainly not a regular. Then again neither am I. If you truly look at this market, the dollar differentials in the choices are HUGE when getting involved with RS or RSRs that can run PCA and HSRA at the same time!!! Late Apex is doing the right thing asking for market opinion on this stuff--and we all know there is anything from a pig rusted out 911 trying to look like a RSR to the real thing out there. The market is small when you look at the number of transactions for anything from the pigs to the Crown Jewels. Please picture yourself as someone trying to learn the high end of the Porsche market (at leat that's how I view this layer of it) while being somewhat new to it. The racing scene is small, so some anonymity is called for in my opinion.

I re-read the thread. It's not VIN validation that is being looked at (well he certainly now knows what digit to look for). Smart buyers will look at HISTORY and make sure the VIN has not been altered. He is asking in my opinion what is a REAL RSR worth with documented history, and what is a really nice replica RSR worth? And actually, I am asking the same question. My bud has a 6 month jump on me and my ultimate goal is to vintage race a nasty (the nice kind of nasty) 73-74 era 911 monster.

It makes perfect sense that a 74 RSR should be eligible for vintage racing but I found in our region they are placed in an uncompetitive open race class. Some vintage organizations only recognize Porsches from 69 and back (2.0 litres).

It woulds be great to see vintage racing open up to the dominant days of Porsche in the early '70s. Well maybe not so great for those racers with good memories.

I checked the site just last night thinking the same thing. What did you find out about the car? Is is a real RS, real RS lightweight or clone?

The private email I got from Late Apex was very nice. I think his initial messages suffered from having a light tone that got misread by some of the guys here (and most of all by me).

Apex, we're all interested in your search -- since most of us can only dream of doing that sort of thing. What's the latest?

Here's a photo of the new badge I put on mine today:

No, I have not yet purchased the car. The owner is currently having cosmetic and mechanical work done to it as well as finally getting a set of matched non-flat tires for it and somewhat putting it back in service. He is also removing the older race equipment that is non-factory. The car gets more expensive everyday and is not going the direction I would have preferred. Probably wise on his part but I was originally trying to get a car to vintage race, so I would have to redo everything he is paying to undo.
Speaking of racing, I am hosting a track event in Savannah, Ga. June 28-29 and July 1-2, with the 30th reserved to go to the beach for the day. It is 3rd annual Willis 100, and has a casual format. The first two days are actually a POC event that we piggyback, and they charge $250. The last two days are ours and you would be my guest. We have two groups, limited passing and unlimited passing. Proper credentials required for group 2. Some of the drivers/cars that show up are outstanding, such as the HSR GTP champ Robert Tornello, and winningest IMSA driver ever Gene Felton.
I'm happy to provide info on this to anybody interested through private e-mail, and also more specific info on the RS through private e-mail.
regards,
Johan

That's a great photo -- the ducktail, the paint, the flared rear wheel arch, the 3.6 badge, the plastic rear window and the subtle '72-only oil filler ... a picture really is worth a thousand words.

Is that a race number written on the rear vent window?

A lower angle might get the fat rear rubber and wide rear wheel into the frame ...

Of course, a 3.6 in a '73 -- how pedestrian!

Excellence has a 3.8 vario-ram in a '73 ... now that's a car!

Just Kidding!!!
