Default EDIT-1976 911 Targa Ferry Porsche Signature Series

EDIT: Been brought to my attention that this may be 1 of 200 1976 Ferry Porsche signature edition 911 Targas. Insignia on the steering wheel, color matched cookies and body, left hand mirror, and the unique color and tweed interior combo are all consistent.

Original plan was for a potential "flip" of this car. Realizing that this mare be a unique model, although not adding great value, makes me reconsider my opinion on the car.

---------------------------------------------------

Hello all, I have to venture over here from the 951 area to ask your expertise on a potential 911 venture I am offered.

The car is a 1976 911S Targa, or so I am told. It is a low millage example at I believe 60K. Has been sitting for many years, but is very clean, super clean tan/cloth interior, and only minimal rust bubbles here and there.

Car is a few hours away, and have not had a chance to personally look at the option or paint code on the car. Trying to gain as much knowledge as I can before going to see it in person.

I know running and in great shape, according to Excellence this car could be worth 17K-18K. Does the color add anything? Anyone have an info?

What would you pay, or do you consider reasonable? End goal, if car is purchased, is to tinker and make it a driver. No concours restoration here, work will be done by myself.

Well make sure you do a LOT of research on mid year cars ( 74-77) They are prone to some pretty serious issues that could run into thousands easily. if you have documented proof engine work was done properl you could have a good little runner. If not you could be looking at a huge money Pit.

Also i don think these cars were galvanized so any rust you say could be way worse in the battery area or front suspension pan.

personally i think these cars are less desirable due to said issues so i dont think color adds any value whatsoever.

Thanks for the info.

I thought that 76 was the first year of galvanized cars?

Porsche didn't start galvanizing until 1976 and 1977.

I think that Porsche started around this time but not the entire car . there are some here who have said car so will be able to advise more .. but if you see rust , that is never a good sign . there is rarely "less'" hiding

I used to own à 1976 911s targa. It had the factory oil cooler and a/c. The color combo looks interesting, I have never seen one like this. I agree that you need to get as much service history as you can. These cars can have overheating issues, among others. This is why it was important for me to get one with the trunk mounted oil cooler. They are great looking cars though. The fact that it's been sitting a while scares me a little. Personally, I don't think I would pay more than 13-14K for it.

The factory color should be on the build tag. A special factory order color should be on the build tag. A re-paint won't.

Having owned, (and tried hard to sell) a Metallic Green targa myself, my guess is that Metallic Green does not, in and of itself, create above-market demand for Porsches.... of course this was "back in the day".

"A little rust bubbling" is a major warning sign.... no such thing as "a little rust".

IMHO, you could spend $17k on this car put $20K into it and have a $17K car.

Or you could get the car for free... put $20K into it and have a $17K car.

If your objective to buying a Porsche is to make money, unfortunately I never got an MBA from Wharton, so I leave it to smarter folks than me to do the economic analysis in this one.

If your objective is to build a long-term hobby car, I'd go for an SC/Carrara... lot's of good, if shabby, ones available at this price-point... the repair cost will be similar, but with some TLC, in the long run, you'll have a better and more valuable car.

The rust I am familiar with, living in the northeast I am no stranger. I understand that where you can see it, there is much more. Bubbles seem to be on the fenders, and some spotting on the rockers.

The mechanics are something I can deal with, though I may not have the most experience with air cooled engines, I don't see it being a huge challenge. I know overheating can cause loose head studs and create leaks, and the chain tensioner issues.

What would you think a car like this would be worth running in driving, if I left the body as is.

I gave you my analysis, but, as I said, get your MBA from Wharton and you can do your own...

After rereading your post, you think this car would be worth 17,000... that actually seems higher than what I imagine. But thats what I came over here to find out. Thank you I appreciate you're input, gives me an idea of a range.

Heres some pics, upon closer look does not seem to be Delphi Green Metallic.

I understand what you are saying, no matter what $$ gets put into this car it will be about a $17K car. What I am saying, is I understand according to your opinion that this car will max out at 17K. Again, that is more than I would expect a good basic driving example to be.

The later cars (77-89) offer some real improvements but the rising aircooled 911 market has lifted the values of 74-77 considerably. I don't think that particular color ads or removes any value. If car is solid without any serious issues $15-17k is fair price.

Looks gold. Looks like a 14k driver to me.
