Default Half Pint... Budget 911 Racer.

Hello,

This is another intro and yet another build thread. You've probably seen it all before, but I'm guessing you guys never get tired of seeing ugly ducks turned into pretty 911s...

This is "Half Pint - 249.5"

A friend (Chris) and I bought this thing a few months ago off the internet. It wasn't a bargain, but we didn't pay too much either, methinks. We own the car 50/50. Any project should have a name and at first I wanted to call the car 'Half-White' because we each owned half of it and the car is white, but my best mate insisted on calling it 'Half-Pint' which was kinda fitting because the decision was made to buy this car over a few pints of beer.

The '249.5' comes from friend the Great Mario who could only squeeze that out of the engine on his Dyno, instead of rounding it off to a full 250HP. I've been ragging him about that ever since.

Anyway, we want to pretty the car up and have some fun with it, so I'll be telling you more about Half Pint in time to come...

Some specs & things we've done so far...:

Car is a 1981 SC with matching numbers, licenced & registered for street use.

3L engine, good internals, RSR cams and 50mm PMO carbs, headers & two exhaust systems. New clutch. New oil catch tank & breather system. New Impellor Fan & pulleys.

Boxter brakes in front, stock rears. Front X-Brace, Coilovers and whatnot. New Rear Drop links, Bump Steer rose joint kit & 4 New Semi Slicks.

Half Cage, 2xRace seats with 4-point harnesses, light weight door cards, fibre glass dash & Poly-Carb windows.

Carbon Fibre bonnet, the entire car is really light - 980kg with half a tank of fuel.

I love it. What are your plans for the engine?

I was in Durban in 1983 and got a speeding ticket. I never paid it, so am afraid to go back. I wonder if it has accrued late fees?

Bodywork...

The faux 964 bumpers and rocker panels were poor quality and did not fit well. We want to race the car in Historic Racing, so we need to get the bodywork more or less period-correct. I really, really wanted to go for a pre-73 RSR look, but my partner Chris didn't like the Pre-73 old school look so we settled on post '74 narrow body Club Sport / RS look, which presented the cheaper option and less amount of work.

But first, we needed to get rid of the inappropriate wing, bumpers and rocker panels. The bumpers bolted off, but the rocker panels were bonded to the car. We had to literally break them off...

We're keeping to a budget with this car, so the engine stays for now.

We have a new government now, I'm sure you've been let off.

We bought cheap & nasty bumpers to save costs.

This will take many man-hours and tons of sweat to get a semi-decent result. The front bumper has been on and off five times before we could get the smiley on and align the thing roughly.

Take it from me, if you have the budget, buy quality stuff that bolts straight on. Don't buy cheap crap that's difficult to fit.

And remember, fresh fibre glass tends to pull and warp. Get it on the car ASAP...

And while we were busy on the front bumper, we decided to build a Snow Plough. (Dedicated to all 911 owners up there in cold northern hemisphere winters)

The Splitter is 9mm Marine Ply-Wood.

Light and practical. We Kept a template and took bets on who's gonna be the first to break the splitter...
