Default 1974 coupe, am thinking of buying, any advice?

There is a 1974 Coupe fairly close to me that I have looked at briefly, and can get a drive in tomorrow.
Car was resprayed black over an original yellow. There are a few places you can tell.
Car shows 68k Mi but not original engine.
Engine is a 2.7L
Engine shows leaking lowever valve covers.
Car has front driver side oil cooler in the wheel well.
Fuchs wheels look good.
Interior needs some help
There is a crack in the dash pad and the dash vent looks to be bent out of shape.
No sunroof
Owner says the exhaust is stainless, but I used a magnet and it sure is magnetic.

I had a look through my buyers guide (I own a 964) and didn't find much for the year. Is there anything that I should look out for in this particular year?

PPI by someone thoroughly schooled in that vintage is absolutely mandatory. If you have my book be sure to read about the 1974-77 cars.

Color changes are usually a negative. Can you post the VIN and engine number/type for us?

It largely hinges on the price, and your commitment to that era car. I personally like the look and handling of the lighter narrow body "mid year" cars. But... as said if the engine is still a 2.7 it will need work, and depending on whether it has had certs installed it could be a deal breaker. It will also need all the suspension bushings replaced, as well as soft brake and fuel lines. 40 years is the max for rubber - especially German rubber. While you're into that you'll be doing bearings, tie rods, ball joints....the list goes on.

When you're done you'll have a tight fun little car, as mine is, but including the $5k I paid for it 15 years ago, I'm currently at approx $17k, not including hundreds of hours of my own time, and I still have what most would consider a rough looking, but good running car.

On the other hand in most states, including mine, it is smog exempt, so I can put any combination of engine, intake, exhaust I want into it, and flash the peace sign every time I drive by the inspection lane...

My biggest concern at this point is nature of the 2.7L engine.

Where will I locate the engine number on this vintage? I have heard rumors that it could be a 2.2L so I'd leed locations for both engines. Any telltales for the 2.2L to 2.7L?
At this point, I'm going to be uber catious. Having a 964 currently, I need a 1974 like a hole in the head, but the price has peaked my interest. Any/all help on the engine number location is appreciated. And once I have the number, where/how/who can deciphre it for me?

should be on the right side of the engine case when facing the rear where the fan housing meets the casing .. get in there with a flashlight

what colour is the shroud ? no gurantee but i think the 2.7 was green.

Yes,I had heard that about the shroud colour. I'll verify. Thanks for the reply. It sounds to me that it is in the same location as on my 3.6L.

The fan shroud on my '74S 2.7 is indeed green.

Default VIN assistance?

I have the VIN #
9114100922

I have information on the 964 models, but not this far back. Can anyone provide some info from the VIN number?

Am (attempting to) attaching 2 pics of the engine bay. I see green, is this the right part? I'm expecting the engine number soon.

Peter

Thanks for the link.

VIN indicates a 911T Coupe from 1974

Just got the engine number:

6106920

Indicates a 911T from 1970(!!!!) which would make it a 2.2L and not the MY 1974 2.7L.

I'm thinking I'll bail. Too much change without documentation here.

But why the green shroud at the fan?

Someone may have cooked the 2.7 and gotten a 2.2 core to swap it out. The basic block, and therefore shroud, etc are pretty much interchangeable. Actually not a bad, if not underpowered idea. Either way parts for the Mag case engines are getting scarce - hence the popular transplant to 3.x. I'm not expert, but I don't think the T had many of the goodies the S did, such as front fender oil cooler, Bilstein struts, S brakes and so on.
This could be an opportunity to pick up a cheap "roller" and have some fun with a "rat rod" or Baja type of project. Maybe the owner will see that it's not a highly desirable car and come down in price. I see it as a $5k max car, depending on the value of some individual parts such as wheels and so on.

Thanks all. You have helped me to avoid a bad decision.

I went to see the car tonight. 2.2L badge across the top of the fan, engine number 610XXX, all signs are a 2.2L. No documentation, scary. Only thing that brought me to it was the drive in the 964, and his asking price. But when he didn't produce any jumper cables (draining battery....), I bailed and wished him luck.

When talking about these old gals, sometimes you're actually looking at a pile of parts and not really a car...
Speaking from experience, they can be big projects...
