1987 Targa Top Whistles?
Hello,
My sister just purchased a 1987 911 Targa.
She says when she goes over 40 wind rushes through the targa in the front.
What's the best way to resolve the seal issue? New Seal? New Top? Refurbished?
Also, the rear view mirror was busted on the stem. Where is the best place to find a new stem or complete mirror?
Thanks,
redbug2

You may be able to gain some additional "seal" by treating the rubber seals with either 303 or Gummi Phledge (sp?), a BMW mainstay for keeping seals like new. Actually, th e303 Protectant is pretty good and easier to find. If dry, they'll expand a bit with several treatments and that may help the seal issue. Otherwise, new seals are in order. Not the end of the world.
Recovering the top is more likely the better fix , along with seal work above, but it isn't a cheap fix. Key is to have it done by someone who is truly expert at it, not something your average convertible top guy can do. There is every chance the new one will be worse if done by an amatuer. I'd try the items above in that order. Mine is pretty air tight, enough where it doesn't bother me and its rather vintage. I don't think any of them are water proof, but not a worry for me as it never sees rain. Good luck.

Targa Top.
If the body and top seals are in good condition, and the windows height properly adjusted, try replacing these parts before you spend the big bucks.
This removed all noises from our '86.
Also, pm me with your email address and I'll send you a copy of the Targa Roof Repairs manual.
Good luck,
Gerry

Gerry, Either I am not bright enough to find the right button or I need to make a few posts to have the ability to PM you. I am a fairly recent Targa owner, 1985, and although my top seems to fit well I'd really appreciate being able to look over the official manual. Would you be so good as to Email me a copy as well? My Email address is in my profile. Thanks a bunch! I hope I can return the favor some day.

I had an 87 targa whistler too. I don't have the exploded diagram handy- but there is a small seal that sits in front of the main targa body seal at the windshield header. If I recall, it's basically a small gap-filler: a hollow circle cross section with a "tail" that tucks in between the windshield header and the targa seal. Adding that back in helped the whistle in my case.
