915 Tranny Gear Oil recommendation?
I have a fairly fresh tranny....
what gear oil are people using?
anyone using Redline product?
any feedback would be appreciated.

Hi David:
Do NOT use a synthetic on your 915. Redline oils are very fine products and entirely appropriate for the later-model G-50's, but the baulk-ring syncromesh used in the 901-915-930 transmissions require a non synthetic oil to prevent excessive wear.
The very best product for these transmissions is Swepco # 201.

for 915 trannys that are in very good condition I might suggest Swepco 212
this is a multi-weight oil.The 201 is a single weight. The 201 is best for 915's that have high milage and have a bit of an attitude with first. The 212 is best for newly rebuilt or low milage 915 trannys.Pelican has both and Swepco web site explains the differences.

hmmm....
I'm sure my tranny has loads of miles on it.
it has a new 1st and 2nd gear with dogteeth <4000 km ago
it's very finiky tho when shifting from 1st to 2nd.
I'm gonna replace the shifter bushings first...
then swap out the gear oil.
I was gonna get shifter bushings from performance products...
any otther suggestions?

it's a mess....
1977 911S chasis
with a 91 body upgrade and 993 interior
1972 911E 2.4 motor on webbers, freshly rebuilt with an even fresher 915 gearbox.
if I didn't have all the receipts for the work done on the car, I'd swear it's been through a chop shop... but it's legit.
I love the car. Only driven on nice days. I'm just working out the idiosyncricies

Very nice looking car !
I'd suggest the Factory Short Shift Kit along with the new bushings, then add the Swepco 201. I have done that to my 83SC and it made a difference. I run the 212 though, but I ran 201 for years and will probably switch back to the 201 next summer, my tranny has 249,000 miles and is a bit tired, as is my engine ! the 201 is best for old trannys like mine.

I have a very serious issue with "short shift" kits.
they burn out synchro's too quickly imo.
I'm fine with the long throws.
thanks for the compliment on the car.
It's a beaut!
201 sounds like the way to go...
thanks for all the insight!

Hi David:
True wisdom Sir, on your observations about short shifts,........ Indeed, due to the geometry of these short shifters, the syncros and operating sleeves wear at a faster rate.
No free lunches, (anywhere).
The only ones we will sell & install are factory ones from the 954 car (911SC RS).
Chuck: Swepco # 201 is an 80w-90 GL-5 rated multigrade oil.

The Factory Short Shift Kit is what the Factory put in 86 and newer 911's .
It is the "other" Kits that have problems. As Steve mentioned. they sell and install the Factory ones for a reason. The 201 is 80-90 but that is not much of a viscosity difference to tell. The 212 is 80-140.. noticable difference, but a bit too slippery for worn trannys. like mine. The main reason I plan to switch back is after I went to the 212 I started to notice that my tranny would get knocked out of gear if I hit a hard bump, my car is lowered and stiffened so it has a harsh ride. This only happens every once in a while but it did not happen with the 201. My car does shift smoother and first and second are not as notchy.I am looking at a rebuild on motor and tranny by the end of this year.
