"Air cooled Brotherhood"
When for a nice run today, weather is 70 and not a cloud in the sky. I must say that every time an air cooled 911, regardless of year is approaching, we always flash brights or thumbs, etc.
This never happens when I am in my '09 or when a water cooled car comes across my Targa.

basically because air cooled are enthusiasts cars .. water cooled although they have some true enthusiasts, and i wouldnt wwant to take way from that . they are also a very large percentage of the "lease a status symbol " crowd

Well said!!! You also find a lot of seniors behind the modern wheels, that barely are alive enough to recognize another Porsche! Haha

On another note, My old 86 gets allot of love, people let you in traffic and are nice, they wave and maybe smile and the little red car BUT When driving the "modern" Porsche, I do not feel the love.... more like hostility from other drivers.
Not that I care but it's interesting.

Which is how it was with the torsion bar cars 25-30 years ago. The rich posers owned a 3.2 Carrera or newish SC, the true Porsche owner had a 356.
Rinse and repeat in 2040 with how people will view 991 drivers.

I, for one, hate the new hydrogen cells in the new 994.4v7 and any real enthusiast wants a robot-assembled car, not one of these new 3D-printed vehicles, and autopilot is for sissies.

I wouldn't say I notice hostility in the '09, but lack of love in comparion for sure. The one good thing about the '09, is a lot of prople get out of it's way when I am fast approacing in the left lane!

Same deal here.
Got a hearty thumbs up from a nice 356 on saturday. I unfortunately was too dumbfounded to do anything but gawk.
Later that weekend was leaving my sons lacrosse practice and paused to check out an SC targa and got into a friendly conversation with the owner who came ambling up shortly. ASked me what kind I had. I asked how did you know. He replied that folks that are truly checking out his car tend to have one themselves. Most others just give it a cursory look.
Neat.

While there is a large enthusiast population in my area of all Porsche models, when I don't get a wave or flash back it is more often than not a driver of one of those newfangled water cooled cars.

I love driving my 3.2. It's addictive! Although just finished the restoration, the wind noise, rattles and the not so perfect makes me smile! Our 991 is awesome for what it is. Perfect! Quiet, refined, fast, great for date night and long trips. But it's perfect! Glad I can choose depending on my mood.

I got an '84 944 in the 90's when I graduated from high school and I remember every Porsche owner always waved at each other, no matter if they were driving a 911, 944, 924, 914, or whatever. I still wave at every Porsche I pass out of habit and 99% of them don't wave back. 99% are also driving a '99 or newer.

Old cars tend to be only enthusiast-driven. The newer cars will have a mix, with many owners that are not dyed-in-the-wool Porsche-crazed types. As race911 said, this was the reality when our 911s were new too, perhaps not to the same extent as Porsches did not have quite as broad an appeal back then (e.g. no PDK option etc. – less accessible for some drivers…)
But there are many exceptions: Two weeks ago I was out in the Boxster. I saw a 3.2 Carrera pulling up to a stop from a side street. I gave him a hearty wave, but he looked right through me… Maybe he was surprised and could not react quick enough, or maybe he thought: “Ah, those water cooled cars are not REAL Porsches!” Who knows?
But on Sunday, whilst giving the 911 its first shake down runs I saw a 996 and waved and got a vigorous thumbs-up in response.
I even wave at Cayennes (rarely get a response, but have on occasion). I guess I feel it is sort of a requirement… Porsche is like a religion to me, which is probably not a sign of a healthy, well-adjusted person!
