Default Best tyres for a 997

Hi

In order to renew the warranty on my brother's 997, he needs to replace all of the tyres, as he can't get one Michelin Pilot sport N3 that he needs.

The question is now what are the best tyres to go for Michelin Pilot Sport N4's or Continental Sport Contact 3 N1?

The car is used for day to day driving and never tracked.

One concern that he does have is being in the same position again in the short term, i.e. that the tyres get discontinued and he has to change the whole set again, as they all have the same N rating to comply with Porsche's warranty restrictions and possible also car insurance.

I have been told that there are N5 variants in some sizes of the Michelin Pilot Sport and with a Pilot sport 3 and the Super Sport available, but not N rated yet, are the N4's getting near the end of their lives, but then I don,t know how long the Sport Contact 3's have been around.

Or would people recommend another brand of N rated tyre?

Many thanks

Tan

You will get a better response posting this in the water-cooled, 997 forum.

But since I owned a 997S and ran it for 70k miles, I will comment that it really doesn't matter (here). Assuming there is not something in the warranty in London that we don't have here, I would not be restricted by the "N" rating - it just means Porsche has tested the tires on the car. Obviously Porsche can't and won't test all tires, so the N rating doesn't mean other brands are bad, just not tested. Similarly, you likely can put a Michelin or Conti on that is not N rated even if the same tire is also available in the N rating (same tire meaning all load and other specs). Search tirerack.com and you will see this.

I ran Pirelli, then Michelin, then Hankook on my car and all were fine. The Hankooks cost half as much, all three ran about 15k miles before being too worn for daily driver use. So at half the cost the Hankooks were an easy choice. Not N rated, though. I also used Toyo and Nitto at the track, but not for street. Also not N rated.

Hiope that helps.

Hi

Thanks for the reply, Porsche UK insist that all tyres are N rated and all forur have to be of the same brand and same N-rating in order to comply with the warranty, the legal limit in the UK is 1.6mm, however for warranty compliance Porsche insist on a minimum of 3mm.

In the past it has bitten them a few times, where they have had to pay for the replacement of all the tyres as one had needing replacing and the same tyre with the same N rating was no longer available.

I was "fortunate" to have one Michelin PS2 N1 have a slow leak. Since N1s are no longer available, Porsche (and Michelin) provided 4 PS2 N2 tires and I paid for only one. Thank you Porsche NA and Michelin.
