Only did it once, and did it with. It wasn't all that easy to get the transaxle mated to the engine with both out of the car, I would hate to try and do it in.

Remove as a unit, both engine and transmission. I don't recall anyone removing only the engine, there's just not enough room to seperate the two.

good luck !

I've done it both ways and find that taking the engine out with the tranny to be the easiest. Definitely much easier to install that way.

i do them all day long and i find it easier to leave the trans in the car. time saved is a dollar earned. the exceptions are 70-71, where you have to turn the TO bearing 90°, and 87 on, where you have to slide out the release fork shaft. it may be easier to pull them both at home, where you don't have a large tranny jack that tilts, and you have a lot of time, but at a shop, you don't do anything you don't have to, because it wastes valuable time.

Thumbs up

Pull'em together, I'm sure that John Walker has all the tricks to shove, twist, pull and yank to get it to drop like your 401k, but for the rest of us with a floor jack and some 2x's I have always found it easier to do as a unit.

Regards

I use a trans jack offered by harbor freight. IT is a tilting, sissor jack that lifts 24" and good for 450 lbs. WHEn I did my drop, engine only, it worked great and cost about 50$. The drop of the engine only went smooth but mating the engine back was formidable task that required lights and mirrors!

now 70$!
