Default So I let the wife take the car for the day....

And now the the gearbox feels like slush... 5th almost pops right out, somewhat clunky going into 4th, 3rd feels funny...

The car drives, but I'm a bit nervous now driving it anywhere except straight to the shop. Any advice??

Is this common after the wife has the car for a day?

Right........................... Know how robust a 915 is? Even a 901?

I could make an "Amish Country" comment, but my wife is from Lancaster and she took to the 915 (on track, no less) and G50s just fine.

Which one? From your signature:

99 996 Carrera
87 944S
00 Jetta VR6
80 Fiat Spider 2000

If it's the 911 in the avatar pic, what year? Shifter bushings, front or rear, could be gone, coupler may not be tight.

My wife loves her manual 05 Boxster and is very good at shifting. She dislikes pdk. And she doesn't like the heavier clutch of my recently acquired 2007 GT3. So they either are competent or not.

If you haven't replaced the coupler bushings, then I would bet on that being it. Mine looked like this, and shifting was like stirring a pot of soup:

Looks like she's pretty enthusiastic with a stick; good in some ways, bad in others...

I knew it is never a good thing when a post starts out with, "So I let the wife take the car for the day....

For me, it was the wife and her friend in my 930 CAB for a weekend. now, with a new clutch and syncros and $ 4300 later . . . She hates the car and will not ride in it with me. She keeps saying I was mean and said terrible things to her ??

They're robust, but dog teeth are dog teeth and they can be worn down or broken in very short order if the clutch isn't operated properly. That's what this sounds like. I once let a female friend have my '82 Champ for a day, and when she gave it back the clutch was so completely worn out the car was hardly driveable.

Just a crappy co-incidence. The wife did nothing wrong. One or both of the coupler bushings failed.

I think...

Mostly it's from an improperly adjusted clutch cable/operating mechanism, not much from operator error. Then again, I've only been into 250 to 300 of the things that have had pretty much every internal failure imaginable, from a customer base of the most inept men to true enthusiast women whose 911s I track prepped.

And if I've been in the low hundreds of these, you've been in a measurable percentage of the whole production.

Let's hear a story or two about the most trashed ones you had the "pleasure" of bringing back to life!
