77 Targa with 3.2 upgrade
Rennlist, have read for years with tons of great info. I have an 83SC that I have owned for 15 years and use as driver with complete bare-metal repaint/interior restoration and recent original engine rebuild with AC upgrade/external oil cooler. Great, great car. I also have low mileage 993 TT that I put a few thousand miles on per year set up with PSS10s and RS sway bars. Again - great, great car. Much Rennlist info has gone into maintenance and more recent purchases so thank you to all. I am considering a 77 targa with a 3.2 upgrade - 915 transmission. It also has Weltmeister and Bilstein suspension refurbish. GHL exhaust with headers and engine performance programming all done by same reputable shop and well documented. Paint and Interior appear to me as nearly new 8-9/10 and no accidents. It is immaculate with detaied records. Current owner is open and honest and has mild OCD with respect to the car. I plan on independent PPI with compression/leakdown. It has slight R rear oil leak and rear window seal needs replacing. ? market value. My sense is 26K-30k but I would value opinions. Have checked rennlist classifieds but hard to find direct comparison. Thanks, tpd

We're talking a narrow body 77 targa? with just a 3.2 swap?
How does swapping a Carrera motor into a 77 make it worth more than a Carrera? Also was the 3.2 rebuilt when it was swapped, or is there unknown history on the motor?
To me a 77 with a 3.2, in GREAT shape, is 15-20k, if the motor has a top end, and the trans has been refreshed or has documented history I'd say closer to 20k, if not I really wouldn't want to spend more than 15-16k on that

I think it all depends on condition and the buyer. Having been in the search for a Carrera for a while, I've seen a lot of swapped 3.2s come and go and pricing is all over the board depending on the condition of the car. There are some mint concourse-type swaps that fetch huge dollars and then there are backyard autocross projects that fetch $15,000 - 20,000.
Ultimately, it's a tough market to price because these swapped cars aren't for everyone and many will view a '77 Carrera as a '77 Carrera regardless of what is under the bonnet.

Pics of old and current air-cooled plus 77 Targa
Appreciate feedback which is always helpful to temper emotion - my estimate appears high but have following info. NB 77 Targa. 3.2 was not rebuilt but compression/leakdown normal. Transmission rebuilt. Starter, ignition assembly replaced. Sachs lightweight flywheel and clutch added. Valve job and new clutch in 2006. All invoices on the way to me with the total work across both jobs at 34K. Car is not concours but in very, very good cosmetic condition. Still negotiating price. My intent is drive it and use for DE which I need badly.

it hasn't had a valve job in 6 years? I wouldn't pay more than the teens for most 915 equipped Carrera's haha, unless it was a documented low mileage or factory widebody car....
Looks like it has some nice BBS rims on it? If I was really in the market I don't think I bite for any more than 16.5, 17K
If your looking for a car you can beat up during DE's and still drive daily there are plenty of good running 3.2's out there that will do they job just fine, and prop hold value better down the road.... plus you really wanna deal with a Targa for DD haha
