1970 Crystal Blue 911E Targa at Salt Lake City Parade Concours

Indeed the PCA Parade Concours Banquet was held on Tuesday night. In a tradition that dates back to when Ferry Porsche used to attend earlier Parades, the representatives of the Porsche family and PAG in attendance selected one particular car at the concours for the prestigious 'Judges' Choice' Award! This year's panel consisted of Dr. Wolfgang Porsche, Hans Peter Porsche, Ferdinand Porsche (Wolfgang's son) and Detlev von Platen (CEO of PCNA). And at this particular Parade Concours, my 'Crystal Blue' 1970 911E Targa was chosen for this special recognition! In addition, I received a Second Place trophy in Class in the regular judging (Preservation)! So it was a particularly rewarding night for this original '70 911!
And the truth of it all is that this win has nothing much to do with me. The folks that deserve the credit are the first two owners of this beautiful car - Doug Troyer of NNJ (1970-1980) and Terry Ritsos of Metro NY (1980-2008) which kept the car in such great 'original' condition long before I became its new custodian in 2008. I first saw photos of this car in 1980 when it was featured in the cover of issue #4 of Gmund (an early Porsche oriented magazine) and the subject of an article. I first saw it in person while waiting in line for a tech inspection before a Driver's Ed weekend put on by NNJ at the famous Watkins Glen track! I drove up together with it to the 1986 Parade in Portland, Maine, where I shared a room with its previous owner for that event. There I saw this Targa win it 'First in Class' trophy at the '86 Parade Concours. I then waited patiently for 22 until I convinced the owner to pass into to my care.
It is a 911E Targa adorned with one of the most beautiful and striking hues ever offered by the factory - 'Crystal Blue'. It is documented that only around 14 cars were painted in this particular color in MY1970, the year when Porsche offered customers the most expansive list of colors in its history (9 'standard' and 21 'special order')! At the 2009 PCA Parade in Keystone, Colorado, this car won 'First in Class' and 'First in Division' in the Preservation Group. At its next outing, this 2012 PCA Parade, it won 'Second in Class' in tough competition! But to be selected by the Porsche family at this Parade for its 'Judges' Choice' award has to be the pinnacle of achievement for this attractive & rare 55K original miles 911!

I failed to take photos of the car in the concours field. I am hoping others that captured it in film forward me copies so that I can post them. In the meantime, some photos of the awards and the Targa at my garage in Colorado! And no that is not me in between Wolfgang and Hans Peter at today's Parade Auto Cross...I have shorter legs than her!

Some additional photos of my car at the Parade taken by Joe Hartman who is a pretty good photographer!
Just a quick note on how my old 55k original miles 'Crystal Blue' 1970 911E Targa did at the 2012 PCA Parade in Salt Lake City!
Altogether this was a particularly rewarding Parade for this un-restored '70 911E Targa and I feel pretty proud of this vehicle! In the only other showing since I acquired the car in 2008, it won First in Class and First in Division at the 2009 PCA Parade in Keystone, Colorado. And some years back, the previous owner (I am the third from new) garnered First in his Class at the 1986 PCA Parade in Portland, Maine. This car first came to national and international attention in 1980 when it was the cover shot for Gmund Magazine's issue #4 and was featured in multi-page article in that edition (Gmund was then like 'Excellence' is today). 'Crystal Blue' is one of 30 colors offered by Porsche in MY1970. It was only selected by 15 or 16 cars out of the nearly 16K produced that year. To say it's a rare color is an understatement. So with this 'Judges' Choice' award by the Porsche family in 2012, this special car continues to roll with good fortune!
