Newbie seeking advice for his 2.4 S
Hi all,
i'm Francesco, from Italy.
Two years ago I bought a 1971 2.4 S (the number 90, october 1971) converted in the past to an SC specs.
I gave the car to a supposed "expert". After two years, I found out that Spyke, my dog, could have done a better work.
The result is actually a ten-footer car:

Now I'm starting again, but i need some advice since i'm not a 2.4S expert. I know much better the 356 (I had a T5 cabrio two years ago).
This is the engine just disinstalled:
now, this is supposed to be a freshly rebuilt engine....
So, squabbles apart, I need some info:
- Should the fuel tank be painted in black or grey?
- Should I paint the entire body (including engine bay and floors) of the same Aubergine 025?
- How should the pipes along the passenger floor be painted?
Thanks a lot for the suggestions.

Hi Francesco,
First I think your car is '72S, with an early build date. Oct '71 and a VIN 0090 would make sense.
I think tank should be gray, engine compartment should be body color. Not sure what pipes you are referring to.
As a fellow '72 Aubergine owner welcome.
You will find a wealth of information on the Early 911S Registry, www.early911sregistry.org

As Bob contributed the www.early911Sregistry.org is going to be one of your best sources for info, I have a very original 1972 T albeit updated with RS engine and componentry, the trunk and engine are
body color, the oil cooler pipes I imagine your referring to are usually bare brass or black, and my original
fuel tank is grey or greyish/beige (I now have an RS plastic tank installed)
sounds like an awesome car ,make sure the thermostat hose is connected on the lower left below the
engine tin, looks to be disconnected at present...Bert

Valve covers paint/no paint. There has been discussion of this on early S. It seems that black painted started mid year '72. Your car being an early build you could go either, as you prefer.

I'll agree and disagree with my friend Bob. First, be sure to join us at the Early S registry forum. All your restoration question can be answered there.
The engine compartment though should be finished like your car shows now, which is body color with black paint over it. I have seen original cars where the black paint is quite thin so the body color shows through a bit which occurs with aging. Not only is the engine compartment black, but so are the wheel wells and the bottom of the car.
Check out this thread for a view of a correct restoration of an early production '72S coupe.

Ok, resto is going on.
At last we saw that the case was cracked so here is another 911/53 case arriving, and for free!!!
Obviously I'm kidding....
So even the undercarriage (near to tow ring) has been fixed:
And so other areas....
More to come....
