Thanks everyone for the comments. Indeed, I have the monoballs from Chuck ready to go in. Fortunately, following Ed's good advice, the car is sitting high on a bend pak lift, so I should be able to get my body on a bar. I'll probably go buy some new box ends for this...I don't want to risk stripping a nut with a tired wrench. I'll post back when I've got them freed up. Cheers.

One out, one to go. I've searched high and low for the perfect tool to get this out. With the transmission in place, there isn't enough room to get a shallow socket in place, but the nut is recessed in the frame just to the point that I couldn't get a wrench on it without stripping the nut. Ultimately, I cut the first one out (very carefully), but there is no room to do that for the left hand side. Last night, I thought i'd try something different. I started cutting a 22mm bolt pattern into the top of the socket. That effectively will extend the nut out by an inch and let me get a wrench on it. I'm off for another week of travel, but hope to find a lathe at the office to finish off my homemade tool and go at it again next weekend.

Can't exactly visualize it, but I can say I looked at mine and said "eff it", drop the motor. You are a brave soul! More encouragement to you.

Damn.... When I had my engine out a dealer tech advised me to pull those and turn the bolts/nuts around.
Alas, I didn't heed his advise and now I'm not looking forward to this job.

3.2 Targa, I'll check when I'm in there, but I think the bolt is long enough that if you flipped it, it would catch on the transmission such that when you back it off, it wouldn't clear the trailing arm. I'll check though just to be sure and report back this weekend.

Here's the PET drawing for additional color.

Update: I managed to remove the driver's side bolt this evening. That was a tough cookie. The key was using this little tool I machined - which I call my "nut socket". Essentially, I machined a bolt pattern into the top of a short socket. The socket went over the nut that was recessed inside of the frame, and allowed me to then turn the socket using a box end (and a lot of umph) while not banging into the transmission. Once I mount the trailing arms back on, I'm happy to share it with anyone else on the Forum who needs it.
