I found out some bad news today. It is nearly set in stone that I will have to replace my transmission. As you may know, I lost Reverse, and 1st gears two weeks ago. It has been determined that it is not the shifter by the fact that the mechanic tryed to shift the tranni manually. Now I'm looking into the possibility of buying a rebuilt transmission. I also found out that it could be one of two transmissions, that are in my car. I am unsure if it is the 901 or the 911 transmission. Any ideas to tell which is which. Do they mount up the same without any modification? I also am looking for a good seller of these transmissions as well. Any ideas on any of these subjects?
Thanks in advance
I can't believe it only lasted a month.

The 901 Tranny has a dogleg first gear with 2,3, 4 and 5 in an H pattern. The 915 tranny has the convention arrangement of 1,2,3, and 4 in an H pattern and fifth off to the side.
Depending on where you are, there are several places that can rebuild tranny for you. Gary Fairbanks and Vertex are two that I see mentioned often. I have not used any one yet so I have not done a lot of research. If you search the board archives, I am sure you can find some threads on the topic.

If you decide to have yours rebuilt, I can very strongly suggest you use Gary Fairbanks. He only rebuilds 911 transmissions and knows them inside and out. I dropped my 915 off in person and he dissasembled it and diagnosed the problem while I watched, then it only took him two days to fix it and reassemble. It works perfectly. He also stands behind his work. He often uses UPS to receive and ship. His number is in Pano.
Oh, and his prices are more than reasonable.
Good luck.

See I don't know if it will be worth rebuilding if it ends up costing more than the transmission is worth. I know it is either a 901 or a 911 transmission both having dogleg first gears, but are there any other differences? Maybe I'm mistaking. I don't recieve Panorama magazine so I wouldn't know the number. Besides I probably need a fully rebuilt transmission. Hopefully one of the Rennlist techs straighten this out
Thanks

Sorry about the transmition. I also have a 911T.
Question for you, does the noise level in you cab while driving ever bother you? How about wind noise, especially over 70 mph? I'm thinking of selling mine because of it. I'm trying to find out if newer ones are quieter.

SPDRacer, I would recommend like others have to call Gary Faibanks tel # 203-866-2466. He is in Norwalk, CT. Now as to which trans you have this might help clear things up-
Type 911/00- 4 speed fitted to 70 & 71 T models, reffered to as 911 type
Type 911/01- 5 speed fitted to 70 & 71 T, E, & S models, reffered to as 901
Type 905/20- Sportmatic fitted to 70 & 71 T & S models, reffered to as sportmaitc and sometimes 905.
So if you have a 5 speed you basically have the 901 transmission.
Info from the Porsche Red Book
I dont think a rebuilt trans will be any less then having yours rebuilt. Check with Gary on this. If you are on the west coast there are some places I could recommend in SoCal.
Keep us posted.
Hope this helps.
JMiller138- My trans is not noisey at all. Now I have alot of wind noise only because I have a Targa that never has its top on. ;-)

The wind noise on my car is very minimal, the only noise I hear is the engine and a little rattle from my updated cd player. You might want to check you windshield seals for this. 911/01 is it the same as the 901's that are in the older models or what. I don't know about rebuilding it still considering I'm going to have to pay quite a bit for three gears, not just one. Im on the west coast.

SPD, If yours is a 5 speed dog leg like HarryD describes then its the 901 (911/01) transmission. I would still have your own transmission rebuilt or at least have someone give you a good est. I dont think a rebuilt could be any cheaper unless its an AS IS, then who knows how long it might last. On the west coast check with Steve here,

901 and 911 might have a different clutch mechanism (one is pull, one is push).
I think, maybe <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> ok, so it only rings a bell.
915 is different, of course (not dogleg).

I emailed Rennsport Systems with a immediate reply. I was hoping to talk to my mechanic yesterday but, I arrived when they were closing and talked to his secretary and his assistant mechanic. They drained some oil out of the transmission and didn't find any metal flakes in it. I told her to have him do a full inspection of the transmission meaning taking it out of the car and opening it up. Hopefully I fin out it is only a shifter fork or sliders. By the way, my shifter bushings were toast along with a linkage bushing, which may have contributed to this incident in the first place. I knew difference between a 901 and a 911 tranni, but is a direct mount up if I have to replace it between the two.

Sorry but mine isn't a Targa, one would be nice here where it is still the dead of winter at least until June. I still wish it was on the road, not rotting in garage for weeks on end
