friends 911sc dies when removing oil cap - checking oil
all,
my buddy has a 1980 911sc and when he removes his oil cap the engine dies within seconds - i read about a vacuum funnel possibly missing? but can't find any other information or posts.
any help appreciated!

First of all make sure he is idling in the correct range 950 is about right any lower and it will stall I am at 850 and sometimes it does.
Follow the rubber hose from the oil tank over to the intake. Where it goes into the oil tank should be.a plastic restrictor to limit the vacuum loss basically a plastic fitting on the hose with a small hole in it.
If that is gone the car will stall for sure.
The restrictor is part 10A

iceman: so no restrictor in sight anywhere along the rubber breather hose. today i used a needle nosed vise grips and some rubber trim to protect the hose from the vise grip teeth and clamped the hose down compressing it and removed the oil cap - idled beautifully with cap removed!
restrictor being ordered as i type.
thanks again for the help!

iceman:where did you get the exploded parts diagram? - i can't seem to find part 10a anywhere on the pelican part website.
i'm also a bit confused - on the 82 911sc , there is a larger diameter breather hose (about 1&1/4")coming off the oil tank which is the hose i squeezed with the vise grips and the car idled fine with cap off - this hose looks to be the only breather hose i see coming off the main oil filler tube and it runs directly to the rear portion of the engine to the intake - *i shot a photo of the hose w/red arrows pointing to it on the thread for you to see. this hose has no in-line resisitor.
in some other photos posted on the pelican website forum the hose they show w/a restrictor looks to be narrower in diameter hose on the right side of the tank (sort of between the oil filter and oil filler tube)and the restrictor is running up and down. i assume this is a later model year 911?
***just want to confirm the restrictor is for this larger sized diameter oil breather hose shown in the photo marked with red arrows**

I got the exploded pic from the Porsche web site . You can get an exploded diagram for just about any car under the Porsche parts section.
I didnt realize it was different for different year SC's mine is a 78 so may not be relevant.

thanks all - i confirmed this is in fact the correct hose for the inline resistor - check out this pelican post - this oil cap looks like its from a 993? and thats what was confusing from this cross post someone uploaded and the hose that has the inline resistor is much smaller in diameter - **if you scoll down on the post i linked below you will see the photo that confused me a bit.
i think i remember my 993 having a yellow oil cap like this but its been a while:

I think some form of restrictor in the breather hose is a regular feature of all 911 motors with the dry sump lubrication. On my 3.2, the restrictor is a brass cone. Simple, maintenance free, and effective.

The part is called a "restrictor" and is part # 930 107 289 00. The OP should verify availability with his local P-car dealer.

Even though this was an old post, it helped me out of a fix that I was in. Thank you guys so much. I basically made a restrictor by stepping down the 1 1/4 in tube by 2 part epoxying, a 5/8 in tube on the inside of a piece of 3/4 in tube. It idles better and I can take the oil cap off in order to check my oil.
even though it was 9 years ago
