The one Porsche of the 20 I let go that I miss the most, is this one.
It felt noticeably quicker than the Varioram 993 that I had later - the gearing was much better on the 964 5-speed and it was just more fun to drive. It was an amazing car.
And the air conditioning was really good, as it was on the 993.

This is the best testimonial you can get.
Of course it is human nature for 964 owners to feel that their car is better than the 993 and visa versa.
But when you can get someone who has owned both models to offer up an opinion it will carry more weight in my books.
Especially when that someone has owned 20 different Porsches from the 60's to the 2000's ..... wow.
I have never owned a 993 so I am only in a position to speak of what I like in my 964 but no way can I compare which is better.

An opinion from someone who has actually owed both the 964 and the 993.

Both are great, the main difference I noticed was the styling (I thought the 993 was better looking, a little more modern while still having a classic 911 vibe) but it felt heavier and the gearing seemed taller, like it was set up to placate the EPA. The white 964 was a RS America which was basically a decontented regular 964 C2 (as opposed to a "real" RS) but most of them were optioned up with A/C, sunroof and a sound system. This one had no sunroof, which I liked a lot. I also had a black one earlier on, but I preferred the white one overall.
Anyway, both 964's and the 993 drove VERY similarly aside from the lazy gearing on the 993. Some of the hardcore 993 guys with a lot of extra cash will install a Euro gearbox or gearset with better (shorter) ratios. That would have been a nice upgrade but it wasn't in my "old retired geezer" budget.
The bottom line is that you can't go wrong with either. The 964 is a little easier to work on if that is a factor but the 993 has a more efficient exhaust system, better brakes and does not require periodic valve adjustments like all previous 911's. I also agree that $30K and beyond is too much to pay for a 964 unless it is very pristine and very low mileage.
Here's a gratuitous shot of the 993 I had. I do miss it but not as much as that white '93 964 RSA

But still, an opinion, and still subjective. Everyone's driving style is different, and many of us have been blessed enough to drive many examples of Porsches on the street and track. It still comes down to personal preference.
