Default Footwell fans won't turn off

OK - '88 911 with manual fan control (dial between the seats, between the heater levers).
Fans do not stop running until neutral is pulled from the battery. Only a few threads here and on Pelican - first cultrips are relay #F in front trunk.
Any other ideas? Has anyone else solved this problem?
Thanks in advance

Alan

Try tapping on the relay. It's the larger silver box in the engine compartment, under the plastic cover.

If that does not turn off the F/W blowers, the contacts may be corroded due to arcing.

OK- I'll check those.
I just pulled Relay "F" (Booster Fan) on the front relay panel - fans still ran.
Pulled Fuse #2 (Booster Fan), fans still ran.
I'll try the engine compartment relay and report back.

Oh- and I did read most or all of those Pelican threads yesterday -thanks for that, though.

OK- It's Fixed!
Rusnak & 86 Targa - Brilliant <G>
I owe you two a beer - next time you're at Mid-Ohio, let me know, and the beverages are on me.
Now to replace that relay - I'll bet it's a $90 peice.

Thanks again - I love this place!

I'm just glad it's fixed.

Gerry is the brilliant one. I'd have had you tapping on the defogger relay!

If it's the 911-618-153-00 relay,
here's the bad news......

And, I would not buy a used "tested" relay.

http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/...I1.x=13&I1.y=2

eBay is a bit less expensive.

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trks...53-00&_sacat=0

I also have concerns with by-passing the Reed switch.

Clean the contacts and let's see what happens.

Good luck,

Gerry

Gerry, do you think a small file or emery cloth might work to bring back the contacts?

Worth a shot?

Default RELAY.

The first thing I would do is:

1. Remove the relay & remove the cover.

2. Re-install the relay.

3. Are the footwell blowers still active,
if so, are the contacts closed?

4. If the contacts are closed, pull the relay,
and, as suggested, clean the contacts.

Most failure modes on this CKT involve non functioning footwell
blowers as opposed to this member's issue.

If the above does not resolve the issue, replacing those electrolytic caps
might be a good idea.

A second look at those floor mounted switches might also be a good idea.

Gerry

Those noted caps would be "elecrolytic capicitors",..(although they DO have a dielectric)!

Best,

Doyle

^ that looks like Autoheat, and I don't know if the year makes any difference?

P.S., more likely pulled the wrong relay.

The Controler relay is common to both manual & auto heat for 911 M/Y 1984 through 1989.

Note: In the interest of commonality, the four wire connector/harness is factory pre-wired for all 84-89 911 cars,
and is stored under the dash for non-auto heat cars.
