Default 75 911S airbox split

Well yesterday I managed to not manipulate the choke properly and heard the dreaded 'pop' on the 75 911S - airbox split along seam below air filter. Have used gasket material to seal the seam and used longer stainless steel screws to secure the now 2 halves more tightly. Car starts hard when cold but once warm runs reasonably well. Question is - can this level of split really be sealed/screwed down to spec or am I forced to replace the box? Thanks all

I don't know for sure, but I believe the consensus is it needs replacing. The crack with form again-heat, vibration, etc.

I don't know how you effected a good repair without taking the whole thing out and inspecting it. if you used that marine sealant it is somewhat pliable but if you took it all apart may as well replace it.

I used to replace a LOT of those back in the day and I never found a way to reliably seal them up after such events.

Always required a new one and those are $435, these days.

Thanks guys - yes - think I'm looking for a new box - and maybe someone to install it ( with a pop off this time ) - the 'partial engine drop' part seems just beyond what I want to tackle......

I have a complete CIS system on a shelf in my storage area, if you're interested in pieces. It worked perfectly well when I removed it to switch to carburetors. Shipping from Ottawa to SoCal might be a bit pricey though.

Thanks for the offer Peter - but think I'm going with all new elements - I believe and have been told by other owners that part of the issue was likely the age of the original box ( OEM to the car ) and it's fragility was a contributor to splitting. So I'm going to do this once with all new ( using the Porsche box w/the diversion tube ) and hope it holds another 35 years!

Think Fabspeed used to make an awesome stainless unit I've seen on a few cars - not sure they're still active with these - and they were close to a grand......BUT you'd only install it once.......
