3.2 Engine Project
I was doing my clutch this winter and planned to do a general clean up and reseal of the motor while it was out. A couple of weeks ago I discovered I had 3 broken head studs, so now it has become a full rebuild.
I'm going to be working on this over the next few months.
I figured I would start a thread for the project, post the progress from time to time, and hopefully take advantage of some of the wisdom of those who have gone down this road before me.

New Garage toys :-)
Princess Auto had a bunch of things on sale this week, so I went and did a little shopping.
Landed home with the following:
- Floor standing media blasting cabinet $199
- 5 Gal parts washer $49
- Low profile racing jack $199
- Bench Grinder $35
- And some other odds and ends
I built a tire rack along 10 feet of my wall today and then assembled the media blasting cabinet and put it where my stacks of tires were.
My wife uses crushed walnut shells to clean the jewelry she makes, so I dumped a bunch into the hopper and tried it out on 1/2 my intake. It is quite soft, and doesn't cut the aluminum at all.
Here is the result, followed by the one that is yet to be done for comparison.

I just finished my '84 Carrera, same thing, I was replacing clutch and while engine was out went to adjust valves, found one broken stud, with 69K I thought I would be a cheapo and replaced the one and a day or two later heard a "PING", you guessed it another one. I researched and looked around, talked to Henry Schmidt at Supertec and went with his studs. The only ones I know with a warranty. The quality and specs are impressive, being ex aircraft and motor cycle mech (ie. air cooled stuff) it made sense. Considering you get nuts and washers included and great customer service price is competitive.

Looking good with the walnut shell blasting. I know a lot of people take this opportunity to powder coat stuff, you may consider looking in to that while your engine is out as well.

The intakes and valve covers are both on the list, as well as the engine tin.
I already did my fan and housing when I had the alternator out over a year ago.

Gotta love Princess Auto (well, for us Canadians anyway!)
Looks very good. I have to echo pharlap71 in relation to the Supertec head studs. They look to be superbly thought out and the price is very reasonable compared to most options.
Are you planning on splitting the case too?

Last year there was a nice fibreglass front bumper that I couldn't get because I had no way of getting it back home. I might see if I can abscond with the company van this year. ;-)

I'm really liking this media blasting cabinet.
Changed the walnut shells out for glass bead today.
Waaaayyyy better!
Took about an hour to do one heat exchanger.

That's awesome. I really need one of those, but I need an air compressor first, but I need 220 in my garage first, and I really, really need a bigger garage first. It's gonna be one expensive blast cabinet. lol
