Did you check the rubber sleeve that joins the two intake manifold halves? I overlooked this on my 3.2 rebuild because it "looked ok". It had swollen over time and was leaking badly which caused a lean condition and stumble above 4k rpm. It's a cheap part and easy to replace but I never suspected it would be an issue....
Yes, mine was swollen so bad I couldn't get the clamps back on it after they were removed. There was easily a 1/4 gap between it and the manifolds.
It was one of many little things that have been replaced.
With all the cracked hoses i have discovered, it's a wonder the thing idled as smooth as it did.

Getting closer.
I did a mock install of the B&B headers today, then went on to install the stock heat exchangers, cat, and muffler. I'm going to use the stock exhaust for the break in on account of the need to get the car E-Tested. Then comes the swap to the headers and the SW chip.
The engine comes off the stand tomorrow, Woo!!

It was a productive day today.
I got the engine off the stand, the rest of the tin installed, and the clutch installed, then did dome work getting the tranny ready to be mated.
I also compiled a list of little things to order before I head to Italy. That way the parts should be here when I get back on the 26th.
Italy is half work, half vacation, including a visit to the Ferrari museum and test track.
The work part is in Brescia, which also happens to have a museum commemorating the Mile Miglia.
It will be nice to be away from all this depressing snow as well.

Ian, just to let you know how badly our hearts ache for you having to take time away from your 911 to go to Italy, I tell you with great pleasure that it was almost 90° here in So Cal today.

At the risk of sliding off topic....
We just got back from Italy and it was a fantastic trip.
The Ferrari museum is much smaller than the Porsche one, with about 40 cars in all and a nice display of F1 Champion cars & drivers. My favs were Steve McQueen's beautifully restored 275 GTB4 and (being a Canuck) Villeneuve's car of course.

I've been making some progress on the preparations for putting the motor back in. I stripped and clear coated the main oil lines yesterday, installed a new sound pad, and knocked a few other things off the list. I'm still finding little brackets that are rusty and need to be stripped and repainted.
The plan today is to mate the transmission and motor, and do a final swish and rinse on the oil tank and front cooler before mounting them on the car.

Here are a couple of pics of recent progress, refinished oil tank and oil lines stripped and clear coated.
Today was a bunch of little things and then finally mating the engine & transmission.

I got the oil lines and front cooler back in last night.
I also went to the DMV to deal with getting her legal. I figured that since I let the registration lapse, I would have to go through the whole E-Test thing, and possibly even have to get it safetied again, but much to my surprise they just took my money and gave me a sticker. It was a good day!!
Hope to have it on the road this weekend so I can put some miles on it before taking it to Hershey the following week.

Today is engine install day.
Hopefully things will go well, it will fire right up, and there will be no leaks anywhere.
To bring this 2 year project full circle I figured I'd post some before and after shots.

Finally fired her up at 11:00 this evening.
Ran for a half hour at 2K on Brad Penn 30 weight break in oil, then did an oil change to Brad Penn 20W50.
I have to admit, the noises have me a bit spooked. I'm just probably not used to how loud these engines are, and a bit paranoid. The right side (4-6) definitely has more valve noise than the left, but pressure looks good. Below is after the change to 20W50.
Oh yeah, forgot to mention, everything is as dry as a bone.
No leaks, woo!!
