On Sunday afternoon I was able to install the cam towers, and this evening I added the chain boxes and slipped the cams in. Next is checking sprocket alignment, then if everything is where it should be, on to timing the cams.
Wooo!
Starting to feel like there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Indeed, after trying to do this with 2 hands and a knee, then 2 hands and my wife holding the straight edge, my frustration level became sufficient that I gave in and ordered mine today. Unfortunately, it won't arrive until Monday, so I'm not timing cams this weekend.

Tools, schmools. I just got a longer bolt that I could since down to about 5lbs. Could "overturn" the cam, allowing it to ease back to get the dial indicator happy. Drop the pin in, and voila. I swear I cranked the motor around the 720deg cycle 10 times to make sure both cams were set perfect.
The process I describe was pretty intuitive.

My Stomski sprocket alignment tool should be here tomorrow, so I wasn't able to check my sprockets and time the cams this weekend.
Instead, I cleaned up and re-installed the studs on my cam towers and chain boxes, then I figured I would place my covers on to see how they looked.

While not part of the engine rebuild, I pulled the tank and stripped it. Then did the requisite prep and two coats of semi-gloss black POR-15. This is the fresh second coat on the top side, so still a little glossy. Man this stuff adheres like nobody's business. Next is the oil tank.

The project slowed to a creep as the cold set in through January.
Last week I stripped and repainted the engine tin with POR15.
This weekend was very nice, first days over 0 C for some time.
Yesterday, my daughter and I pushed the car out of the garage to turn it around, so it was a great opportunity to get some pics of the car with the refinished wheels.
Today I finished cleaning the engine bay and installed the intake on the motor.
Discovered a few more little bits that I want to repaint before I put them back on.

Did you check the rubber sleeve that joins the two intake manifold halves? I overlooked this on my 3.2 rebuild because it "looked ok". It had swollen over time and was leaking badly which caused a lean condition and stumble above 4k rpm. It's a cheap part and easy to replace but I never suspected it would be an issue....
