Question 1972S

I'm presently the owner of a 1996 targa, and
not really too familiar with older 911s. A friend of mine informed me the other day of a 1972S 911 coupe for sale. Can anyone tell me if there is such a thing as a 1972S? If so, what does the S mean? And, would this car be basically a good car, (taking into account its condition, which I do not know)? I would also like to know what engine was used that year,(i.e.. 2.7 litre etc. or other)? Any information on this year and car would be most appreciated.

A 1972 911S is a rare and valuable 911. It has a 2.4-liter MFI engine. The S designation is the sport model, which was tuned to 190 hp, with alloy front brake calipers. The other 911's available that year were the mid-level E and economy T.

Many 911E's and 911T's have been re-badged as S's, though, so be careful. If it is an authentic 72 S, the VIN should begin with the digits 91123...

A good source of information on the early cars is:

<a href="http://forums.pelicanparts.com/forumdisplay.php?s=37b11574e7b39652ecb3609870648772&forumid=8" target="_blank">http://forums.pelicanparts.com/forumdisplay.php?s=37b11574e7b39652ecb3609870648772&forumid=8</a>

Some of the guys there are massively erudite with respect to early 911s.

Can you tell us a bit about this car? I was aware of a '72S targa for sale in Akron, but I hadn't heard about any coupes.

I really haven't seen the car yet. It is located in southern Ohio. Rumor has it that it is indeed a 1972S coupe. We'll see and let you all know. I'm planning to visit it this weekend.

Thumbs down

Well, here's the deal on the 1972S. Basically,
it was junk. Plus, it wasn't an S...it was an E.
Thanks to this discussion board, which I believe to be the best possible source of information available when it comes to P-cars, I was able to identify this car. Someone had re-badged it. The VIN numbers were not correct for an S. Thanks again to Rennlist for this valuable service. Also, thanks for all the inromation from users.
