Ok, i really feel stupid here, but I have the entire interior out of my car (new carpet, and putting an 86 interior into my 80. Just can't figure out how the gearshift **** comes off. Don't want to break anything..it does turn counterclockwise very hard...not sure if it screws off...or does the cap pop off and it attaches from underneath?
I know I'll cringe when I hear the answer..but hey, if you can't ask the dumb questions! laughing

Hi Jim
This is not a stupid question, they are pressed on to the shifter. Turn it either way it won't make any difference. I used a pair of vise grips clamps on the shifter 1/4" below the **** then pounded to metal wedges in between . I know now that probably wasn't the proper way to go since it took the paint off the shaft, but I wasn't to concerned because I replaced it with a one peice boot and shifter. My car was a 78 SC back then. If I had to do it again I wouldn't..
Good luck

It's not that hard to pull one...just find an open end wrench that is sized for your shift lever. Hit the wrench upward with a soft faced hammer...perhaps use some cloth between the wrench & the shaft & **** to prevent scratches. The **** is held on by a crush sleeve, so you'll need a new one of those before replacing the ****. Not a stupid question at all...we all have to ask somebody how to do things from time to time, especially if it's the first time.

On my SC, the **** comes off by brute force. Fint a open end wrench that is the same size as the shift lever, use this to tap the **** off.
Put the wrench against the ****, and smak the crap out of the bottom of the wrench with a hammer.
Warning: If the **** flies off and hits you in the forehead, you are required to post in this forum, so we can laugh at you.

hey..as an update (last typing timed out..so i hope this isn't a duplicate!)...i didn't get hit in the head as I did head advice and worked from the side! However, my hand sure started hurting from holding that stupid wrench while pounding furiously...so I ended up holding the wrench with a baseball glove on! When it finally shot off (yes shot off!) it ricochet'd around that interior like no one would believe! I'm surprised I didn't shatter my rear targa glass. Well, I drove it down to the body shop today as it is getting stripped and an OEM widebody put on it. Hopefully it's back in a month!
Thanks all again for the help...was the last piece I needed to get out before taking it to the body shop (the leather gear shift cover!).
