So, either way, you are going to be spending a little more cash after purchase... either on the tail or the chin (added to the cash you will still no doubt need to spend fixing "little things").

I would normally agree that it is nitpicking, but if the asking is $22K firm, then that is top dollar and pickiness is fair!!

Of course a good PPI is still important. Lots of things to be checked under the skin...

I have to agree with Ed and 500-19B on this one. It doesn't come down to "preferences" on this one because as far as I know these targas didn't come witht the whale tail. I think the only one that did is the M491...please correct me if I'm wrong. For today's market $22K is very strong money...more for a perfect car that meets COA.

Real tail - even used is around a grand... Then paint.

I'd recommend a good quality duck - I think they look better than a carrera tail on a targa - and most likely you can get into one for under $1000 with paint -

G-50 carrera's a great cars

Any comment on these?? Second one had a top end done about 30k miles ago and a clutch last year! Haven't heard back from the first one though the price seems ridiculously low

Not much to tell from the 2 pics and no description. Topend job does not always mean good things, but if it was done 30K ago, I guess it "took".

Trust me, I know all about changing tails and how easy it is-Ruby's on her third and last with the duck. My assumption was that this one isn't stock, and may help get the guy into reality that he doesn't have a pristine gem that cannot be replaced or duplicated. I'd not get into a pissing contest over a grand or two if it is really a nice car. Life's too short, and these cars can suck up $2K making something right out of something that is wrong really quickly.

Knock down=negotiate
Knock=desecrate/criticise

Hi all- been following this discussion and wanted to share my recent observations of an '88 Targa w/72k miles and on 3rd owner that I saw here in San Diego yesterday. Presumably it started life in Washington state, then NorCal for many years and last year down here in SD. Current owner is MBZ repair shop owner and this is his first P-car. He was kind enough to put it on the lift for me but time constraints prohibited a drive. Excellence magazine $17,500-$24,600 but AutoTrader, Craigslist and eBay seem to be higher in their asking prices. He's asking $24,900.

Generally speaking it looked good however here are the main take-aways:
- PO replaced the 2 real wheels w/aftermarket J-brand Fuch look-a-likes, the fronts are the real deal
- Undercarriage is clean, no visible scraping or damage anywhere and all lines intact
- Lips under all 4 wheel arches have the factory texture but front looks like it was resprayed by PO
- No leaks from oil return tubes & engine generally clean
- Minor+ leak from L side valve cover and chain box area
- A lot oil residue on tube that runs across the top of the engine behind the fan (sorry not more clear) and on the inside of the fan
- Exhaust system & headers all very clean
- Engine & tranny mounts look OK, CV boots too
- Transmission bell very dirty (compared to engine cases)
- Green shocks (Boge?) all around, decent rebound
- PO repaired Targa top, looks good, fits snug but not absolutely flush
- PO installed interior vertical adjustable strut braces behind both seats
- PO installed non-OEM front spoiler
- Windshield has dime-sized chip repaired by PO but very visible
- Both heater blower motors squeal REAL bad
- Rubber seals on bottom of both door sills is torn
- R12
- All electrics work except clock was slow
- Interior & carpets in VGC w/minor bolster wear on driver's seat, dash in VCG
- Both hood & trunk stayed up
- Trunk interior VGC, nothing funky near battery or gas tank, has tool pouch & jack
- Aftermarket radio, alarm and battery tender

Here's the car and be interested in your thoughts:

That's a nice looking car. Nothing is a deal breaker, but it looks like it needs t-stat, sender, breather gasket attended to-at least a partial drop. I'd subtract $1000 for the rear wheels. Greens are Bilsteins. Alarm should be jettisoned. Lots of blowers squeal, but add them to the negotiation column. IMO, that is top dollar, and I'd expect no mechanical issues. Probably a $20-22K car?

Nice car for sure.... 24k is def top $$$$. The thing is, another 20-30k miles... It may need engine work... Now, you are @$30k into it. If you have the means.... Do it and be happy, she is a nice looking targa and you will be a proud owner.

If a PPI shows it to be ok today, I'd not worry too much about what may be looming. If that were truly a problem on these cars, then we're all sitting on time bombs and should have our heads examined. Which, is probably true anyway.

PS- $6K doesn't get much engine work in a 911.
