Why all the Targa hate?

We chose a Targa because the weather here demands a Targa. I'm not knocking coupes either but for the weekend cruiser, it needed to be the Targa. At some point I'll comment on the charateristics....

I'm obviously a coupe guy. But there are some targas that are absolutely gorgeous. I don't think they're is a coupe guy that wouldn't like this example. I fell in love with this car before I bought mine. There are all nice cars.

That's exactly right. There is no substitute to the open-air of the Targa while retaining a semblance of "security" with the hoop. I love my coupe, but there is no comparison in driving sensation while in wonderful SoCal weather. If I lived somewhere where it was hot and muggy all of the time, and needed A/C, maybe I'd change my tune. But, I don't!
Although, now that I think about it, I had her for several years in TX....

I picked the Targa since Chicks dig them
Seriously I test drove a few coupes and Targas and the win noise was not much louder in the Targa vs. the Coupe.
I also like the extra rear/side visability, the rear glass window that will not fog up or scratch and the kids have a little more head room.
Try them both out, the coupe and targa are both wonderful Porsche's.

They both have their slight advantages relative to each other. I was always of the mindset that I would consider either a targa or a coupe. My (slight) preference was for the coupe as I like the coupe looks better (100% subjective) and it will always be a stiffer car, although I question how important that is 99.9% of the time. Anecdotal evidence suggests that a targa may develop a rattle or squeak a little more often than a coupe... not surprising of course.
That said, the open air aspect of the targa is a BIG plus and brings the equation back into balance in my book.
At the end of the day, if a good targa had crossed my path first, that is what I would likely have ended up with. I still feel it is a brilliant way to integrate open air motoring with a elevated level of roll-over protection.

Thanks for all the responses guys.. I think what I'm hearing is whether it's a Targa or a Coupe, if it's well sorted and works for me - pull the trigger.

Hate may be too strong a word. The detractors that I found with the targa are that it's not as good looking as the coupe, it's more prone to creaks, wind noise and leaks than even the cabriolet. This is purely based on my experience, having owned 911 coupes, targas and cabs.
Having said this, I think the targa open top experience is the best out of any other open top cars. The cabin turbulence is minimized while still offering a great convertible feel. I currently have a targa-style non-911; I can comfortably drive it with the top off even on a clear winter day in the Pacific Northwest.

I have a 914-6 with a Targa roof. Yes, there is wind noise and it creaks going into driveways, and you have to tighten the top. But with the triple choke Webers, no smog equipment, light weight (less than 2,000 lbs), and responsive motor, the removable top is one of the finest features of the car.
