Need advice on buying a set of 7x16 and 8x16 Fuch wheels
I have an 88 Targa (Gaurds Red) and want to replace the aftermarket wheels that are on now with a set of Fuchs or a Fuchs style rim that maintains the original look of the car. I'm thinking - Black Petals with a polished rim.
How much should i expect to pay for a decent pair of fuch rims?
I have seen some on Ebay for 1500 dollars but they need to be refinished. I thought that was a bit high, but is that the going price for these rims now?
Is there an aftermarket company that makes "Fuchs" that might come in a larger diameter, maybe 17's. I would like to stay with 7 and 8's. I have heard that 9's in the rear are very expensive.
I have seen two different part numbers for the 911 Fuchs
Porsche Part # 911.362.117.00 for the 8's
and
Porsche Part #911.361.020.45. for the 8' also
thanks

I suggest you not go with fake Fuchs. They don't have the same characteristics as the factory ones. They look Ok, but don't stand up to punishment like the factory ones.

Be patient if you want real Fuchs. Watch Craigslist, local PCA website and check with the local Porsche Indy shops. I recently picked up two 951 8" for the rear and two 911 7" for the front. Paid 650.00 for all four. They needed to be refurbished but I took care of that over the weekend. The quality of the forged aluminum is so good the lips polish easy then spray the center and you,re good to go.
My 2 cents hold out for the real things....... There out there and reasonable prices can be found

8 x 16 are going to be expensive. 1989 was the only year they were `standard' as rears. Flat face 6 x 16 are more expensive than 7 x 16 believe it or not. Continue to monitor as many sources as possible. They will come to you eventually, at a reasonable price (probably faster than you expect!)

Here are pics of the four I bought. My car came with a original near perfect set of sixs and sevens but I wanted something wider plus I wanted polished lips and there was no way I was going to alter the original finish on the set that came with the car. I found four that were already in rough shape with curb rash and whatnot. I filed out the curb rash, striped the anodizing, sanded and polished the lip and painted the centers. It was not near as much work as I had anticipated. Cost of wheels and materials to refurbish $675.00 Add in a little elbow grease and here ya go!

99% of wheels delivered new on Porsches since 1989 are cast, not forged. A quality cast wheel is just fine for typical driving, including HSDE. Lots of Porsche racers use them in all-out competition, as well. While forged wheels are lighter and stronger, you're typically buying 30+ year old wheels with unknown history vs. brand new cast wheels made to a standard. (Euromeisters are made in Japan to the JWL standard).
The recent spike in asking prices for Fuchs really calls into question the value difference. If new cast replica sets are around $1000 and used 30 year old Fuchs are $2000 and up, you really have to think about it.

I picked up a set of 7s and 8s in March and paid $1,500. When I first started shopping I thought I'd get them a lot cheaper. In the end, after looking at Euromeister and original, I was very happy with the price. Here's what they looked like when I got them and what I ended up with after painting the centers. (They make the car look totally different.)

Wow, I have seen them frequently for $1200 for the four. I would keep looking around and take your time. There are deals out there. Hell, I have a spare set of 7's&8's and if I can get north of $2,000K for them I am selling them considering I only paid $650 for them.

yes i felt 1500 for the rims were kinda high, I will continue to look around. Maybe Ebay seems to be causing the price increase. Thanks for posting the rims before and after pictures. Can you guys post the methode that was used to refinish them at home, i.e. paint and sanding techniques.
i
That list of part numbers is very helpful. I wasn't understanding why they would have different part numbers for the same style/size rims
I checked Euromeister and they seem to be Temporarily Discontinued.

My process was to clean the heck out of the rims and get all of the brake dust removed. I was lucky that the lips on my rims were still in good condition and only the inside portion had to be painted - so I can't speak to refinishing that portion of the rim.
I used Rustoleum semi-flat in a rattle can to paint them. I did this to my original set and they turned out great and the paint held up well.
I found the rims by posting a want ad on Pelican. Good luck on getting a better price. You can probably do it, but after a month of searching and money burning a hole in my pocket, I jumped on these.
Yes, Euromeister seems to be having some kind of issue. Everytime I called and asked about ordering the arrival date was a month out.

Jackel...
There quite a few threads on Pelican on refinishng Fuchs. Please search there for good info on various technics.
I stripped the anodizng off with heavy duty over cleaner. Then sanded the lips with 400-800-1000 and finished with 2000 grit sand paper. Next I put a round polish wheel in my drill and polished the lips with red rouge. As far as the centers go I took a scotch brite pad and scuffed the black paint and made sure it was clean and then painted them. No need to strip off the original black. It took about 8 hrs to do all four wheels.
regards,
Mike
