Default Emissions Inspection Fail - help

Hi all,

So I just picked up this car on Sunday and went to the good 'ole GA DMV today to get it Titled/Tagged. Last year of emissions on this car in the state of Georgia and of course it fails.

It failed on CO reading. I had already ordered a new Air Filter which may help (have not received it so it's not installed). I'm thinking I should also replace the O2 sensor...

The car seems to run like a top and have zero exhaust smoke. Any other things I should address before attempting a re-Inspection?

thanks,

JC

How many miles since its last tuneup??

If you don't know for certain, I'd strongly recommend:

1) New plugs, cap, rotor, and wires.

2) New oxygen sensor.

3) New fuel & air fliters.

4) Run a large bottle of Techron through it (driving hard) and immediately change the oil.

Thanks Steve -

I'm not sure about the last tune-up, but suppose it's a good idea to do one now. Waiting on my Bentley manual so I can attempt everything myself. O2 sensor, air and fuel filters are pretty simple - not sure about plugs, cap, rotor and wires - but I'd like to do all of this myself so I get more familiar with the car.

Steve's 1-4 would bet you to pass. There are reasons for each item, including changing the oil. A new O2 sensor makes sense to me.

Was it fully warmed up? If you get there and the car sits a while and cools, that could make a pass harder.

It was properly warmed up. I'm just going to give it a good tune up which will be good for me too (learning about the car)...

thanks all!

Not much of a writeup needed. The sensor may be tough to get out if it has been in a long time. Be careful when unplugging it-many cars' connecters disintegrate, needing some improvisation to repair.
