Default Value difference 1987 3.2 coupe vs 1988 3.2 targa - My decision made!

This may be an very vague question but I hope I can get some opinions.

Assuming we have two cars that have an identical condition mechanically and cosmetic.

The only difference is the year difference and the style.

How much more or less would you pay between the two?

1987 coupe
1988 targa

Interesting question. I had a beautiful 86 Targa that I sold 10 years ago (with less than 30K miles) for $21,350. It was not an easy sell, and frankly, it would never have been for sale if it was a coupe. I am sure a coupe would have sold more quickly for ~ $25K.

Based on the number of used and excellent Targa and convertible models that linger on the used market, it wouldn't surpise me if there is still a 20% discount.

Other thoughts?

Best,

Matt

Targas are worth 10% lower than an equivalent coupe and more interestingly cabriolets are worth 10 to 15% more than a comparable coupe. Please bear in mind for the right buyer all these "rules" don't apply. Assuming they both are truly mechanically and cosmetically and if I were you, I would get the car that is more original and has more complete service records. To find cars with those two attributes are becoming rare and will always hold more value IMO. Good luck.

I've heard 10% difference. But I'd miss the open feel of a targa on a nice day. It would be nice to have one of each. A targa for the road and a coupe for the track. Unfortunately I'd also have to live in the coupe as my wife would throw me out of the house.

Condition is paramount. As a general rule, market demand goes from coupes, to cabrios, to targas.
All have their faithfull followers with preference being totally subjective.

+1

Condition and buyer preference will set the price.

I prefer coupes. I'd pay more for a nice coupe.

Me too, as to coupes,...Buyer preference ALWAYS prevails, in the end,..and no rules apply (not even the market).

Personally, I prefer cabs but since I already have one, so between coupes and targa. I prefer the coupe more. That's where my question originated from as I look for a 3.2.

A 1987 3.2 coupe with the same milage as a 1988 Targa.

Only differences (since in the real world, nothing is the same in comparing)

Coupe better condition than the Targa (though I'm not sure the paint is still original or not though believe so by the vendor of one year)

Coupe have updated R134 A/C and Targa has nonworking R12 A/C

Coupe interior rates as a 8.5 versus Targa a 7.0

Coupe tires are great condition, targa requires new rubbers

Coupe price is overall $6,500 more.

Opinions?

I agree with Dr. Woot's post. I also agree that condition is more important than body style. We are talking very broad generalizations here, not individual tastes. 10% sounds like a lot though. I'd say that is the outside number. It could be somewhere between 5-10%.

Adams' '86 Targa sold for north of $25K recently, IIRC, so some individual realized that true sports cars have open tops....

Default Decision made

As what everybody states, value is in the eye of the beholder.

With a little impulse and emotion, just picked up a 1987 911 coupe. Whether I got a good deal or not will know in the future. In my eyes, the car was great, the vendor did a PPI (though the result was brief), it was favourable, maintenance records are minimal with just oil changes.

Deal done

Will try to post pictures once I take some.

Well congrats and I hope it brings you joy.

Just a question-the seller performed the inspection?
