Question Parking Brake Question

When the parking brake is applied, the rear wheels on my car can be rotated back and forth about an inch at their circumference. This makes you jump when you stop on a hill, apply the parking brake, release the main brakes and the car rolls back . Is this normal behaviour, or do I need to fix something?

Many Thanks,
Gordon

Same question for me, I can roll my 1977 911 back and forth about 5 cm with the parking brake on. Is this normal 911 behavior, or do I need to fix something? Thanks.

Hi,

Two potential problems:

1) Parking brake cables out of adjustment or stretched.

2) Worn parking brake shoes.

I'd pull the rear rotors and look at the shoes before adjusting the cables for stretch.

Thanks for the response.

I should have said this in my first post, it rolls very freely but definitely hits something solid at each end of the roll -- just like the "park" position in an automatic tranny.

"In gear?" Good question.

No, it's not in gear. The behavior is the same for both sides. No hand brake, I can turn the rear brake disk easily by hand. Handbrake on, both sides independently turn freely maybe 10 degrees, and then clunks to a sudden stop. It's the same forward as backward.

If that's a problem, at least it is symmetric! When I get the disks pulled off I'll report if it looks like a problem or a "feature."
