911 value ??
Im thinking about buying a 1986 Targa carrera 3.2 from a local guy. I would like to get an idea of the value of what i should pay for it. The car is close to mint interior and exterior. The motor sounds great and doesnt leak at all. Its red with a factory whale tail. new tires. It has 97 k on it. The guy is the original owner and it was really taken care of and garaged. He has service records on it going back about 15 years. Its all stock and original. I would think to find an original owner that old of a car is tough to find. What the approximate value of a car like this.

not to pick on this poster. just a general coment that i am getting very tired of the " how much is this car worth" .. guess i am subject to the standard response .. " you didn't have to read it " ... rant over carry on and have a nice day.

I know that I will get nailed for this response but I will still state it. The 3.2 has become the bargain 911. Hence people who would normally not be looking at a premium sports car are now in the mix. With that comes
the mentality of bargaining and (not necessarily you or others on this section) creating the current poor economy as an alibi for a lowball offer just to fit it into one's budget. Original owner, pristine well taken care 911 with a stellar PPI is to me a rare gem that is priceless ... I agree with Ivangene's post. What is he asking ? Don't worry (as much as people will tell U how much of a targa fan I am) I don't like pre-87 model yrs ;-) .

here's one source, usually considered a bit high...
http://www.excellence-mag.com/resour...uide/211641324
look at ebay & filter for completed deals on similar cars. also the usual sources; NADA, etc.
mkt is weak & thin right now, but choice cars marketed patiently hold value pretty well.
I'd shoot to close a deal under $20k (but I don't like Targas as much as Coupes, red or spoilers...).
sounds like a good history (accidents?). how are the valve guides? all head studs ok?
good luck...

You are the one that has to figure out with the help of a good P-car mechanic is you are looking at a gem or not. If it is then I say atleast 24 to 25 k " in this economy " .

I went and saw the guy again today. He bought the car when hen was 46 years old he is now 71. He has kept recorords since 99 and showed me the original bill of sale. The car has 16 inch Fuch rims was that a rare option?

16" fuchs are not rare, but they are desireable.
The long-term ownership is certainly a good sign, but even a loved car can have issues. Get a good PPI.
The hard thing about answering these value questions without good pictures is that "mint" can mean many different things. I have seen many a car described as mint being much more "average" to me.
There is a Carrera coupe on sale here that looks like a truly good deal. A little higher mileage then the one you are looking at, but a really solid-looking deal. Benchmark what you are looking at against this car to give you a rough idea where you're at:

The car you posted looks perfect. Nicer then what im looking at. Your right people see things in different ways. Not to say the car im looking at isnt nice but different. Its like what im looking at but mine would be a targa which from what i hear is as not as sort after. i dont know i just trust the guy. Gut feeling sometimes you have to go with it. im sure im gonna get a tough response on this one
