Newbie here...looking at a 1981 911SC
Hello Guys. I ran into a 1981 911 SC Targa the other day that has 140k miles. It has a rebuilt engine by a local guy here in NJ. Its a two owner car and the owner has all the documention. Is this something I should stay away from? There are some items that need attention (new sun visors), but nothing major other than some TLC. My local Porsche tech is going to look at it Wednesday. All input is appreciated.

A picture and a general price range would help. How about a transmission rebuild with 140K miles? Certainly could be worth pursuing. Be sure to tell us how the PPI works out.

Chris welcome to RL. If a reputable mechanic has rebuilt the engine and has all the documentation that should not deter you. Let's see how it drives (your mechanic who should be an air-cooled specialist should be able to tell) and the PPI results should shed light on it's current condition. Keep us posted.

Chris why would you think you need to stay away from it ? rebuilds are normal way of life with these engines .. if it was done corretly you could have found a gem that has many more miles left .. get a PPi and decide from there if your not sure about the Marque . Hang around here for a few weeks or do some searching and you will learn a lot very fast ... well actually most of it will be useless information you can use at parties but there is te odd bit of real data

Thanks guys. Its getting checked out this morning! Hopefully all goes well. The motor was rebuilt by Autohaus in NJ. I know the clutch was redone, not sure about the trans. I will find out today though. It has new pads and front rotors as well. I will grab some pictures tonight if it checks out. Silver exterior and black interior. It needs a little TLC, but I think it has potential.

i bought an '81 5 yrs ago with about 150k and no rebuilds. now she's a track car and still no rebuild on motor or trans. lots of suspension work, brakes, clutch... but the 3.0 and trans are stock. find one that's not be abused and no rust and they seem to last forever (don't count on ever having AC though

Well I pulled the trigger! Picked it up last night. I can't wait to start picking away at the car. The first issue(s) that needs to be resolved are some rust spots by the headlamps. I am going to call some local restoration shops today.
Interior wise, I need to find some sun visors. Anyone know where to find some? The ones on the car are shot.
The drivers side door panel needs some attention. Hopefully it can be repaired.
Other than that, it's going to get a major detail to bring it back to life. I will post pictures along the way. Thanks for the input!
