Default Carrera 3.2 - Steering Wheel Swap

If all goes well, we'll likely be the owner of a "new" 1989 Carrera 3.2 tomorrow! Here's a crap cell phone picture of the car for good measure:

The car has quite a bit of cosmetic flaws that need attention - one of which is the steering wheel:

What would be my best option for replacing/refinishing the steering wheel? I'm leaning towards the aftermarket route (Momo) if it isn't too expensive. What size/adapter would I need and how easy is the install? Do you guys have any recommendations of specific models?

My other route would obviously getting the original 4 spoke wheel refinished. What would the approx cost of this be?

Thanks in advance for the help!

- Max T.

boy, she has seen some wear inside - outside looks pretty clean, what do you know of the car?

dont know about changing the wheel but removing it takes like 3 minutes... the horn "pops" off and there is a single nut (about 27 mm - I forget) comes right off...

IIRC the body color beads on the seats were special to the silver 89' cars - someone can verify -

Nice looking car!

I got an estimate from a well respected shop for ~$300 to get the steering wheel recovered. Welcome to the madness!

congrats! from the photo it is hard to tell how bad the leather is. I have had good results on similarly worn leather steering wheels thusly...
- clean it real well w/ a mild leather cleaner
- after it is completely dry, use a fine grit sandpaper 400/600 grit to smooth out the rough & broken areas.
- use a high quality black leather polish on it, a coupla very light coats, buffing in between coats

if that isn't successful, consider a good quality leather cover like Wheelskin - carefully installed, they are quite nice. if all that doesn't work, you can still blow the $300. Leatherique is a great product for restoring dry & cracked seating covers. remember - it will only be original materiual once, & if your (free) labor can bring it back, you have saved $ you will need on the mechanical side of things. good luck!

Isn't AGLA still in business? I used them (gasp) back in 1993 for my new-to-me-then 1979 911 SC.

Found it - here is there link: http://www.aglausa.com/p/home.html

This company has been doing Porsche steering wheels since 1985, and did really nice work for me back then... I sent them my wheel and they sent me a "loaner" wheel. Total process took several weeks from what I remember, and looked factory new when I got it back... Pricing starts at $210and up... They also sell kits if you have the time and inclination ($70)

If you choose to go aftermarket, you might be able to pick one up on ebay or the like... AUTOMOTION sells Momo steering wheels for you 89 911. Check out this link: http://www.automotion.com/steering-w...r-porsche.html Looks like they run from $100-300 new...

there was a hell of a fire storm over AGLA on the 996 board about a year or so ago

https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...for-996-a.html

not sure how it worked out, but I would search before I used them

Wow... I just spent the last 30 minutes reading through the Rennlist threads of MANY ticked-off customers with pics! All I can say is that his work back in 1993 was very, very good. Apparently 17 years changed things!

Thanks for the update...

The leather on the wheel looks dirty and a little worn. Are the stitches okay? If so, you can call an upholstery guy that can dye the steering wheel and the seats so they look brand new. I've used this company locally with awesome results! http://www.drvinyl.com/usa/

Dallas Custom Steering Wheel is the one I was recommended. I think there are threads here about their work. http://www.dallassteeringwheel.com

If you don't have your original wheel restored, a Momo Prototipo looks like it belongs in an air-cooled 911, IMO.

I believe the Momo hub adapter for '74-89 is part # L231.

That's a nice looking Carrera! 1989 is (arguably) the last year of the best ones.

Welcome to the "slippery slope"
