35W or even 50W hi/lo HIDs that plug directly into the existing socket will OUTSHINE any halogen and will generate less heat.

The problem using HID lamps in housings designed for halogen lamps has more to do with focal length positioning and lens design.

Beam displays are way off since the HID arc isn't in the exact same position as the halogen filament and that results in a lot of glare, even with bulb shields.

I'm no expert on this subject, however I know somebody that is and I'd kindly recommend a conversation (e-mail or voice) about this subject for some enlightenment. http://www.danielsternlighting.com/home.html

H4s are quite simply the best thing you can do for that vintage 911 then anything else. It took me a few years to figure that out in the 1980s. With an excellent cut off system the 100W should not attract unwanted attention. Definitely wire in the relay or you will suffer from premature turn signal switch failure!

Thank you Dan, I was hoping to hear from you.

Steve, pick up your phone. I'm ready to order.

OK guys, the check is in the mail. Literally.

Here is another questions for you guys...

Can I re-use the rings from my H5s on my new H4s???

Steve is sending me black rings, but it just makes me wonder if they aren't interchangeable. I'm totally stoked to be getting black, but was just thinking out-loud again.

As to that excellent H4 cutoff system.... anyone have a reference / guide to aiming/adjusting these things? I've just gotten 80/100W into H4's but I'm pretty sure I've got the lights aimed down too low.... question is, how high can I tweak them 'legally' especially to get better road coverage on low beams before I start blinding folks?

Here is a complete guide on How To Aim Headlamps and Auxiliary Lamps:

http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/aim/aim.html

Also here is what a correctly aimed set of European ECE US DOT headlamps
looks like on low beam compared to the correctly aimed set of US DOT headlamps.

Notice the much sharper light cutoff above the horizontal axis.

I don't think that you can reuse the H5 trim rings over the H4s.

What a coincidence.

I was just on the phone with Steve Weiner and ya, it's a good thing I ordered the black rings that match my car 'cause the rings are not interchangeable.

There was a large box on my desk this morning when I got to my office that had my new H4s, relays, 100/80 bulbs, spare 4watt "city lights". I've mocked it up and shot some pictures but the electrical will have to wait. I'm so frickin' excited....

and Steve, Thank You

here is the before and after:

There are paintable trim rings that go over the black adjustment ring. I can't tell from the picture if you have the paintable rings, or if you just have the H4 body.

Tech tip: Before tightening up the mounting screw, you can align the body with the mounting tab with an icepick.

icepick -

...and if I screw it up he included a second set of screws just in case.

That is actually part of the H5 housing that won't be going back in. The bucket looked fantastic. I will be wiping out the dust and putting on new rubber bands (if I can find them in my messy shed)... There is a nicely sized drain hole in the bottom of the bucket, so most water just runs out.

I just picked up a set of high temp sockets. I went with nylon, not ceramic. Doorman makes good stuff and this looks like what is needed for this. There was a site online that sells a plug-in male H5 to female H4 plug adapter for $35.00, but what I got was at Autozone for like $8.00 so.... Now I just gotta figure out what wire is what.

http://www.dormanproducts.com/p-10715-84790.aspx

...and I'm thinking that I may do the "city lights" while I'm in there.
