Default Sold an STi, Looking for a 911

I sold my STi and now im looking for an 911.

I found an 83 911 around Boston for 9000. It has about 103k miles. The AC and Heater doesn't work and theres a slight oil leak on top of the motor. Theres also some droplets of oil on the ground when its parked for a long period.
Other than that, the owner says everything else is in good condition.

I know i should get a PPI but ill only be in town for a few more days

Should i rush in pick this up

Whats everyone's take on it?

You NEED a thorough PPI on any 911 you may consider.

The cost of repairs & parts is far different from other cars so there is a lot at stake.

Remember, there is no such thing as a "cheap" 911.

Well, you've heard it from a Jedi Master. If for some reason you need to get into that motor, you could easily spend the purchase price again.

That all said, the leak up top could be breather, t-stat, sender, etc, all common items on these, and not a huge expense. Many, not mine(!), do leak a bit, and there are some common items to look for.

But, since you are new to these, spend 2 or 3 hundred to get it checked. You also don't mention if this is a fun car or to be a daily driver. That would effect my decision, depending on what the car needs.

A thorough PPI (including a leakdown/compression)....THERE IS NO SUBTITUTE to this step even if you are in a hurry to get one.

How are the head studs? That is is the first thing I had checked during my PPI and it cost $$$ to have it checked. As others have said if you need to tear into the motor plan on another $9 - $10k.

Just to be clear to the OP. These cars are tough and most go many miles before needing major work. The only lesson here is to be a knowlegable buyer.

If the topside oil is leaking onto the exhaust cross pipe, then odds are the oil thermostat or pres switch. If from valve covers, then easy to fix as well.

.....porsche costs of repair vs. your subaru....maybe 5x, not even considering you are looking at a plus 20 yr. old car.....and therefore greater frequency of repair.
silly not to take your time & get a p.p.i....& in any event the seller may not be your best friend.....(if it was original owner i may be convinced to the otherwise)
....only advice i can give buy absolutely the best/most expensive edition you can afford - with ownership history, solid record of maintenance, showing signs of love & attention..
no need to rush!! (as benjamin franklin said....haste makes waste, stitch in time saves nine & never trust a naked bus driver, or a guy selling older car).

Not to be party downer...but a pre '89 911 (non turbo) is going to feel like an old tractor compared to an STi...

Plenty of "Fish" out there.

Take your time and follow the advice of the others that have already posted on this thread.

I don't agree with this at all. Maybe a bit will be given up in a straightline, but that's it.

Turbo charged 300 HP 290 torques 2500# AWD STI

NA 214 HP 195 torques 2800# rear engine rear wheel drive Carrera

Huge differences in performance. However, just sitting in a Porsche will be many times better than the plastic-ee cheap feeling STI, and yeah it doesn't sound like a tractor.

kind of correct.....(about 300hp, turbo'd, AWD....skidpad tests way past .9g....with boxster engine thats strong, relatively easy to modify), but its not a porsche, its not good looking & unlike the tt supras, skylines will never be a classic
