Cool how do you make a porsche sound like this?????

<a href="http://www2.csc.ne.jp/~ferrari/355araiver3.mpg" target="_blank">click me!</a>'
take a look and listen at that!!

in all seriousness, i have always wondered why those cars have the sound they do... I know it can't just be the exhaust, is it the fact that they are a very small displacement V8??? any suggestions as to how they accomplish that F1 style exhaust note would be greatly appreciated!!

355 is a V8, and the appeal of the sound comes from the fact that despite Ferrari's apparent deficiency in Torque in this car (268 lbs/ft), it produces adequate HP (380 bhp) and does so at 8,250 rpm. Any car that pushes 8-9K rpms within normal "happy" operating specs of the engine will sound awe-inspiring.

compare this to the Turbo (still cheaper than the 355):

<a href="http://us.porsche.com/national/models/911/turbo/technicaldata/default.htm" target="_blank">911 Turbo technical specs for those who didn't realize it was faster</a>

(wanna know why its faster? compare the 363 Nm of Torque in the Ferrari to the 560 Nm in the Turbo)

That particular car has an FS Racing exhaust system and it would sound alot better if the driver wasn't bouncing it off the rev limiter and actually knew how to shift. Myself, I prefer the "bubbly" sound of a Porsche motor. I don't like cars that sound like a swarm of mosquitoes - mainly 'cause theres so many *%&#^#%$&% mosquitoes where I live.

Let's face it. The Ferrari is more expensive than the Porsche because it is more bitchin. It has nothing to do with the specs. It has more mojo. More sex. More beauty. More unbridled decadence. It's more rare and more exotic. I'd take that particular "torque deficiency" anyday, if I could afford it.

Thank you, Mr. Santore!

Speaking of affording it, I have this idea. I need another car enthusiast to go in on this with me. I would LOVE to drive my Carrera out (of the Bay Area) to Reno or LA where I could rent a 355 for the day (no one rents Ferraris in the Bay Area). The rental would be somewhere around $1K for 24 hours. That's not worth it to me, but splitting it would be. Trouble is, none of my friends think even $500 is worth it. Simians! If any reliable & solvent Porsche sorts would like to go in with me, stay up all night pitting the Porsches against the Ferrari, please let me know.

Cheers,

Who wants to drive a Ferrari when you are already driving a Porsche, no body wants to back slide. You probably get 1 hour worth of driving time out of the Ferrari because it would break down every 10 minutes. That's why it is rare, because it sits in your mechanics garage more than your own.
Good luck on finding somebody who owns a Porsche wanting to pay that kind of money when they are already driving the best. You can't beat German.

Good Luck

I remember reading in Auto Week (in the column entitled The Market where Keith Martin describes one car sale from a recent auction) about a Ferrari Testa Rosa that needed a 30,000 mile tune up that cost $7000 due to the need for a partial engine drop.

Is that true???

Rob:

The Ferrari V-8's sound like that due to their 180 deg crankshaft and the firing order. The engine is; in practical terms, 2 four cylinder engines with a common block and crank. Listen to the current crop of CART turbocharged engines, too,.....!

This is why they all have that high-pitched scream,...

Using 180 degree crankshafts in a 90 deg V8 offers excellent exhaust tuning potential but the only drawback is a higher vibration level. Carefully designed engine mounts take care of that issue.

Red face

Cognative disonance. I love em,but these cars are all wrong from the get go (911's). The term means "we know it's wrong, but we've got too much money wrapped up into these things,so we'll call them quirky." These things are great, don't get me wrong,But the money wiesach engineers have sunk into to these cars just to get them to go down the road straight would feed small countries for decades! I mean come on. If you were to take a hit in the rear of a new Turbo at let's say 20 MPH,you would have suspension geometry out of whack, motor shift, linkage bend, exhaust crack, not to mention the cosmetic damage. No sorry guys wrong, wrong, wrong! But they do sound good at full chat. Mike. FN;no tomatoes please,my opinion only. <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" />

Cool

I was lucky enough to drive a customers 355 earlier this evening and would take a Porsche 911 (any 911!) anyday. I had a good 1/2 hour (not enough for me) to get used to the car and explore the car's limits (my customer is very understanding and yes he was in the passenger seat with me). I found the power delivery boring, the fact that it rattled (read 13,000 miles from new!) over severe bumps and the general layout (couldn't get my knees away from the steering column and I'm only 5ft 8) uncomfy.
The sound is great but I stil prefer the sound of a 911 at full pelt with a racing exhaust sytem, a 930 is even better.
The other thing which got to me was the fact that my customer said he daren't drive it properly and that it only comes out for dry weekends (rare in scotland!). Why have a car if you can't drive it?
I'll always be a Porsche lover... just my opnion.
