redline....and then some. is 222 mph possible?
So here's the question. Was out with buddy yesterday in his 996. there was a tricked out M7 on the free way that thought he could hang with a Porsche (hahaha). Hung on until 150. No one on freeway so we kept going....hit redline in 6th...friend said that speedometer said 222....is that possible??
I know that with rev limiter should have cut power? ?right? so does that mean that the car has a "chipped" ECU? (he is 2nd owner but dealer never mentioned anything about car ECU being chipped).
i mean i kno you CAN go higher than 204 which is what porsche tells you, but my question is can you do it on a stock 996 without messing with the ECU ?
second part of the question -- if we redlined it and rev limit DIDNT cut in -- could there possibly be some engine damage? how would he kno?
Thanks
PS. it was exhilarating joining the 200 club!!

This is a weird post.... I hope your buddy's 996 is a turbo, or he was definitely blowing smoke.
When that baby hit 200 miles per hour, you would have seen some serious ****!

Rev limiter is usually a fuel cut off device.
A 996 GT2 has a top end of 198.
It is usually the drag coefficant that gets you.
The horse power needed per mph becomes expotential.
so not likely.

I know what it takes to go 212 in a Porsche.
The last factory built 2381 lbs 962 "outlaw"
3.8l, updated FI, bigger turbos, 800+ ish HP .32 DCE which would not have been legal car when raced originally.
Even at a .30 DCE the math doesn't work.

I would be surprised if (1) you guys were going anywhere near that speed, (2) your friend had time to even look down at the speedo, (3) the car went past redline (he saw the tach too?!), and (4) there was no obvious engine damage. A lot of things adding up to make you go "hmm".

not likely, not likely at all, really really not likely, pretty much, no
it would be some serious HP to do that...the Veyron takes some 350-400 HP to reach 200mph and the remaining 600 (total 1001HP) to get the last 50 mph for top speed... and then you change the tires @ $$$$k a set after one run.... high speed is not for the stock 996 and 222 is freaking fast !
Also unless he is a very very good high perfornmance driver with TONS of track time (and I know he is not or he would not have driven so fast on public roads) I would not have riden in that car........ no way, no how....

Here's the good news: you didn't damage the engine.
Because you weren't going anywhere near 222 mph, or even 200 mph. The top speed of a 996 is about 175 mph -- if it's in perfect tune, with the right tires and pressures, on a favorably-laid-out length of track. You were in a second hand model, of uncertain tune, on unspecified tires, on a stretch of freeway. If you didn't feel the rev limiter kick in (a sudden loss of power from the fuel supply being cut), then you probably aren't even in the 175 mph club.
Porsche speedometers have been historically optimistic (people claim it's a TUV thing; I'm skeptical; I think it helps sell cars). I don't know if that optimism carries over to the 996 model's gauges. But I'll tell you this: the difference between 150 mph and 200 mph is pretty big -- both in terms of how it feels and also in terms of what kind of engineering it takes to get there. No amount of ECU tweaking is going to push a stock 996 anywhere near 200 mph. If that were possible, Porsche wouldn't have to make any of its higher-priced models.
And here's a final buzzkill thought: please be careful doing stuff like this. You put yourself at risk -- and also a lot of people who didn't decide to speed at all, but just happen to be using the public roads.
Just because you have a car that can go 160 mph on a freeway doesn't make it a smart idea to drive that fast.

Ha. Back when they built the outer, outer, outer loop road in Phoenix on the west edge of the White Tanks, some of the guys (Chris Fisher, the "original" Powerhaus guy, among others) would use that 10-15 mile stretch for top speed runs. New pavement, and I don't even think there was desert wildlife out there. Rumor had it that the goal was to get into the 200 club. Even with a domesticated 935 engine it didn't happen.

When I was young and foolish I did 178 in a hopped up 930, which was scary fast on public roads. There was more but I was like yeah that's enough. Telephone polls start looking like picket fences, and you are living with decisions you made seconds ago, which at a buck seventy plus is a LONG time.
