Default James May of "Top Gear" Drives His '84 911

James free-associates while driving his 911 through London. Nothing too spectacular, but he says a few words about the 915 transmission in part two. He likes it, by the way....it's a two-part clip.

I always thought him to be a smart man. His '84 is WAAAYY quieter than mine.

He could use a bushing refresh, and he shouldn't reset the ODO while moving.

What is the secret joke about Richard Hammond's favorite 911 gearchange being the 4th -> 5th shift??

ps. Just killing time while I wait for the mechanic to call me with the diagnosis on my "brake failure/healing" mystery.

yea, quiet.. someone should email him and warn about re-setting the trip set while driveing (ask me how I know )

hmmm. I thought that was only an issue on the old 928s.

Greg, unlike your G50, the 915 has "personality"; i.e. no real gear detents, so you need to be extra careful about shifting.
And when you're motoring down the highway and decide to explore the territory known as "5th gear", you need to be reeeeeeaaaaaaaaly careful...

The 915 fosters a special relationship between driver and car which can lead to long-term ownership...or long-term drinking problems!

Ok got it.....

Upshifting to 5th = (accidental) 12,000RPM 3rd Gear downshift???

You won't hit 12k rpms, but you'll get close to $12k in damage. Maybe rarer in occurence.

I should point out that G50's are not immune to a money shift?

Rennlist.com also causes a "money shift"....

I didn't even know about M&K exhausts until about a week ago, and it turns out there is now such a thing as 17" Fuchs alloys...

Sometimes ignorance is bli$$....... knowing now that such parts exist can get expen$ive in a hurry.

I honestly don't think it to be that big of a deal. The rubbery gear is going to break anyway, resetting it or not. You may postpone the envitible if you wish and I don't have a problem with that but don't make it out to be a solution to the problem. I always reset mine on the Audi while stopped and it broke while moving anyway. There is no hope for that VDO rubbery gear! The teeth are going to come off or the gear is going to break into multiple pieces due to time. I'll now happily reset my tripometer all day long while moving and never worry about it now that it has a real plastic gear in it.
