Icons that make up a 911 icon: Part 3
This happens routinely in my life: It's way past midnight. My pager wakes me up with an uncomfortable shock. I am called in to the hospital to remove a piece of meat stuck in a patient's esophagus for the past four hours causing complete obstruction. So I freshen up, open the door to the garage and get prepared to get into my car. As I walk across to the driver's side, I can't help notice what is on my 911's hood. Something that reminds me that I'm about to drive not any ordinary car....where the drive is as important as the destination (or the purpose of the drive as in this case). How can one not be in awe of this part of the 911: It's labelling: THE PORSCHE CREST.
Legend has it that Ferry rapidly drew this design for the car's emblem on a napkin. The first real change to the badge happened in '95 when the lettering was thinned out and changed to a black color (see the inserted 997.2 badge) to provide a better contrast against the gold crest of Baden Wurttemberg (home state of the Porsche). The black and red stripes along with the Stuttgart coat of arms (Ferry enjoyed drawing this as a child) and the rampant horse (an expression of power and the city's seal)in the center...just gives me goose bumps every time I see it.
How to keep it clean: A good quality foaming glass cleaner, Q-tip and a shot of compressed air usually knocks the dirt out of every nook and cranny on those coat arms, Porsche lettering real fast and easy. I only recently bought my Carrera 3.2. I wish I had taken pictures before all the cleaning (to demonstrate all the caked in dust/dirt) to show you how different the emblem looks now (see the second picture) after a thorough cleaning. That angle shows you all the grooves I'm talking about.
WOW FACTOR: Timeless emblem on a timeless car. Yes, you should be proud of what you own each time you see this crest. I am. So now go and clean it well. Pleeeease.

I really wanted to take nice shot of the crest with good artificial lighting, but I do not have bright lighting in my garage. ckindel, you have just fulfilled my desire. Looks factory fresh. I'm amazed. How old is that badge. Mine is 25 years old.

Last year I broke a mounting pin on the original when taking it off to remove the Stongard clear film I had applied in 1997. So this is a factory new replacement.

Good call, my home PC is dead today so once its back up I will post a pic I took of the crest, its SO good it looks like I cheated. I was waiting for this thread, its like having something to look forward too, a little exciting and a little currious.

ckindel's picture is surely stunning. Yes now go and give your crest a nice deep clean. That is why I do these threads. Help members recognize the value of these iconic parts of their 911 and to give them some tips on how to keep these parts as clean and original as possible for as long as one can. I get a kick meeting that challenge. That is why I was so particular in getting an original car without any restoration. Not that there is anything wrong with restoration. But a car is original only once and that is the most fascinating aspect for me in a car of this age. I know I am crazy.
Thank you Ed. I know nothing technical about the 911's to contribute (as opposed to most of you). So this is my way of entertaining my fellow RL'ers. It feels good to know that atleast some of you eagerly anticipate what is next on this series.

I've got one of these pics, too. Mine's a new badge as well. I tossed the old original one when I replaced it. It was in poor condition, but what was I thinking. Still kicking myself.

w00t, look at yout 09' badge, it should be smooth (no features), when I bought a new one for my 996 they offered me the new one at 1/2 the cost, I was wondering why I would not take that... then I compared them....FWIW you can put a 996 badge on your 997 and it will look like the 86' 
and lastly, the GT3 RS has a sticker for a badge - all about saving weight

Good tip Ed, I sure would love the 996 badge, I did not know that. I do not prefer the flat smooth badge...not after seeing the '86 one.
